| ssenay's Full Review: Sharp Zaurus SL-5600 Handheld |
I've gone through a numer of PDA's over the years, heretofore they have all been PalmOS based. I'm a Unix/Linux "geek" and something of a wirehead in genral, but in a PDA I wanted a simple, powerful, faster and highly functional tool, not a toy...
The SL5600 more that steps up to the plate. With WiFi that works in the form of a linksys CF WiFi, and readily available software that works GREAT this PDA is more an extension of my office (and home) infrastructure. All my servers and machines report back to my SL5600 periodically and between Opera and SSH connectivity I can EASILY connect to and control ANYTHING with my PDA.
Connectivity in the form of a second CF for when I'm in the field, extends all this power and capability to an almost limitless degree via my cell phone. Imagine a COMPLETE Linux machine with all the bells and whistles in the palm of your hand to connect to and control everything.
When I'm out and about on roadtrips or hiking in the woods, a wireless serial port talks to my Garmin GPSMAP 76s giving me full navigational and reporting data in COLOR with the adility to easily add unlimited maps (including detailed TOP maps) to the SL5600 on a CF or SD card to expand my adventures...
Compatibility with other systems is great, word and excel documents move between the SL5600 and office machines with ease, and simple, easy to use, powerful MySQL database functionality makes this machine a real productive tool for anything you are likely to want to use it for... VNC ever let's me see, use and control Windows machines without a hitch...
The built in keyboard is a goodsend, and the handwriting recognition works great right out of the box but unlike the Palms, can EASILY be tailored to a specific user. In fact one of the first things I did when I got mine, was tailored the software to use Palm "Graffiti" since that was I was most used to at the time, but I've since updated that quite a bit to "fix" what I've always considered shortcomings in the Palm software.
In short, power, conectivity and functionality with a fast, lean OS and a GREAT color screen (Laptop or Plam OS5 quality, not the grainy, gross look of a Palm) make this an excellent buy and there is easily as much software for this (with more being ported everyday BECAUSE it is a REAL OS) make this a serious win!!!
