Cons: no back-lit screen, kind of expensive, made of plastic-feels cheap
The Bottom Line: Considering other music players on the market, the SONY MZ-NH600D is put at a pretty good price. It's looks nice, performs well, and best of all, it's different.
missjulz's Full Review: Sony Walkman MZ-NH600 Personal MiniDisc Player
This little device is the greatest. For the past week I have been searching the internet for some type of music device to store all the CD's I own and some that I will soon own. I needed something I could take everywhere. At first I thought MP3 player...but then I realized that those didn't store much and were really expensive. So why not spend $20-$50 more and get something worth the money like a jukebox. The Zen, IRiver, and Ipod were all out of my league. I only planned on spending around $100-$220 for my device. I almost bought the Dell Jukebox (literally). I entered a credit card number and everything, but luckily when it asked for a "ID number" I didn't enter one...so it didn't work. I am so glad that I didn't buy the Dell DJ, regardless of all the good reviews I read. It was quite heavy for what I was looking for.
WHY BUY A HI-MD PLAYER RATHER THAN AN IPOD OR DELL JUKEBOX
-It is less expensive.
-The new 1GB card allows just as much music to be put on.
-A regular "AA" battery could be used.
-Built-in batteries don't last that long AND replacing them costs a fortune.
-It is smaller and lighter.
-It doesn't freeze, because it isn't a hard drive.
-It has a jog dial which is the same thing as the wheel on the IPOD.
-There is no limit on how large your music collection could get.
-It won't skip.
-Good sound quality.
My only complaint would be towards the headphones that came along with the minidisc player. From the size to the sound quality, it just sucked. But all music players come with bad headphones, so I guess it was okay. Just buy another pair. Also SONY should really add a backlight to the screen of all their minidisc players because it is really hard to fumble through the music in the dark. Also the package doesn't come with a car kit or radio, which all other minidisc players provide.
Also, another bad thing about this device that has less of an advantage as opposed to IPODS and the other equivalents of it out there is that it is ridiculously loud. Each time it goes from song to song, you can hear it spinning inside. This isn't a problem is you're working out or doing something where it's nosy, but if you're trying to study at a library, you might want to leave it at home.
REASONS TO BUY:
-Cheap-around $100 (not as expensive as when I bought it)
-You don't know too many songs (around the hundreds, who really knows 5,000 songs?)
-Don't want confrontation. (i.e. rechargeble batteries need to be replaced by the company and music machines with hard drives freeze)
-Don't plan on using this thing in quiet places or in the dark.
All in all, this product was okay. I wouldn't say that I'm totally ecstatic about what this minidisc player gave me. However, it did its job-played good quality music. It's really up to what a person is expecting to get. I hope this helps.
