First of all, let's talk about the CRT/LCD decision. My parents perspective, compared to my own, may help shed some light. They're old people, so they like big text. They do very little beyond a few emails, and some word processing, so refresh rate does not matter to them. They qualify for the handsome presentation of an LCD. Don't get me wrong. I envy their desk. It's neat, clean, and doesn't have a hulking monitor sticking out the back anymore.
I on the otherhand enjoy gaming and movies. I live in the land of the large, and in charge, CRT. Even at 5 ms, I still find UT2k4 blurry or fuzzy with movement on an LCD. It is not horrible, but it is distracting enough, that to appreciate the game, I still prefer the resolution and speed of a big, heavy crt. This morning, while watching Team America (off the pc, obviously) while folding laundry I was reminded how much I enjoyed this monitor. Time to write a review!
It's been about two years since I made the purchase. Work was hectic, I had built a new machine, and was shopping for a new display. This Samsung called out to me from Best Buy, and I answered the call. Now, the hectic schedule at work kept me traveling for some time to come before I even got a chance to plug my new baby in, and that almost spelled trouble. DOA!!! Yup. Nuttin, Natta, Zilch out of my first 997DF, and it had been nearly three weeks. My item was marked for 14 day return!! What was I to do? I resorted to flirting and manipulation of course!!! Find the least secure looking young lady behind the customer service counter, and pour my heart into it!
Obviously successful, I was off to the races. Knowing my luck had already been pushed, this monitor was plugged in before the screen door closed. It worked! And it always has, every single day after that. CRT monitors have been around for a long time, and their quality has been something that can comfortably be taken for granted. Differences between brands and models is minimal beyond pitch. You can expect nothing less than stellar performance from the 997df.
With a max resolution of 2048 x something, you can cut scrolling to a minimum when chugging through ebooks or long epinion reviews. Gaming is of course bright and complimented by seamless movement. The adjustment process on the Samsung has a 2 minute learning curve. The buttons are nicely hidden on the side, so they are unobtrusive, but still easy to find. If you have ever changed a video setting on a television or monitor before in your life, the menu and changes are intuitive..
After three years, I still have a bright white picture, with no discernable changes in tone across the screen. The monitor goes from off to full on within about 4 seconds. The sleep mode is excellent, with nothing on the display to annoy you (like logos or moving icons). All in all, I've been pleasantly surprised. This was my abandonment of Viewsonic brand loyalty, and it hasn't bit me yet. I noticed some people listed the appearance as a con. Mine looks exactly the same as the day I decided to purchase it, so it must not look too bad :)
