Pros: Least expensive printer for making quality checks, prints 17 pages/minute, fast start-up time.
Cons: White casing doesn't match all my other silver and gray computer equipment.
The Bottom Line: Great for printing checks, shipping labels and documents without halftone graphics.

| glenn_welt's Full Review: Samsung ML1740 Laser Printer |
As the publisher of software that makes checks, bank drafts and deposit slips, I am forced to test many printers on a regular basis to see how they handle thicker (24 lb.) check paper and if they can be used with MICR magnetic toner.
I tested the Samsung 1740 with a MICR toner cartridge from checksnet.com and then took a few samples to my bank to see if the MICR codes and numerals would be readable by the check scanners. Happy to report that every check read perfectly.
I then loaded a stack of check paper in the Samsung tray to see if it would feed a number of the thicker sheets without jamming. All sheets fed perfectly straight and i noticed another positive feature.
Most laser printers curl the paper due to the heat generated inside. This Samsung barely caused any curling. This is important when making checks because curled checks can jam and they pass through many machines at banks and clearing houses. If you've ever gotten a bank statement with an added strip at the bottom or in a carrier (translucent envelope) you've probably seen how banking machines can mangle a check.
Regarding the toner, I concur with other reviewers that complain about Samsung providing such a small amount of toner in their cartridges. Even the replacement cartridges sold by Samsung aren't full. If you think about, it's easy to figure out why. Samsung and the other printer manufacturers make their fortunes selling us cartridges after they've "given us" the printer for $99.
On a happier note, the checksnet MICR cartridge claims to contain 3 times the amount of toner. Based on the checks, shipping labels and other documents I've printed, I believe it will last much longer.
