| billnu's Full Review: Samsung ML1740 Laser Printer |
There are lots of good reviews already written, so I'll just add my experiences. I've had this printer for about 8 months now, and it only prints an average of 10 pages a day for school or work. Compared to the slow,ink-hogging,noisy Epson inkjet it replaced, this is a great printer.
The PROS:
(1)It's every bit the printer that my old HP LaserJet 400 was that I paid $600+ way back when! I paid $99 for this printer.
(2)I've used Avery labels with no problem.
(3)Toner can be refilled for under $10! It works.
(4)Lighting fast once it warms up.
(5)250 sheet paper tray
(6)I plugged it in, hooked up the USB, installed the driver, and was printing in less than 5 minutes. The disk also has a nice printer status monitor that will tell you when the printer is low on ink, low on paper, paper jam etc.
(7)I've had 1 paper jam, which was easy to clear. The feeder works quite well.
The CONS:
(1)If you print heavy stock, such as envelopes or card stock, you might get frustrated with the manual feed mechanism.
(2)The toner cartridges cost almost as much as the printer, BUT, my starter cartridge only recently ran out and I bought an ink refill kit (4 refills) on Ebay for about $10 and it works flawlessly. It was so easy that a monkey could do it! I imagine that the cartridge will have to be replaced eventually, but if I get a couple more refills out of it, I think it will have paid for itself.
(3)doesn't print color
(4)Like all lasers, it has to warm-up (about 30 seconds) when you first start a batch, but then it prints the pages so fast that it's worth the wait.
(5)Another reviewer said it uses a lot of power...I think this is probably true compared to an inkjet because, like all lasers, it has a heater element...no big deal.
