| rootin4ndandvt's Full Review: Samsung ML1740 Laser Printer |
After a good hour or two spent on-line researching low end laser printers, I opted for the Samsung ML 1740. On the same day that I purchased it, I opted to take it back. It's not a bad printer, but it has one big flaw that didn't fit my needs.
The printer is very easy to install. You pull it out of the box, pop in the toner cartridge, put in some paper, plug in the USB, power cord, then turn on your computer. After that you simply pop in the disk and the software walks you right through installation. My installation was seamless.
The print quality is crisp and clean (just what you would expect from a laser printer) and the overall print speed is fast. For $100 it's tough to expect any more than this. And really, this printer's print quality and speed rivals that of printers that cost MUCH more.
So what's not to like? This machine is noisy. It's noisy when it warms up (which I could live with as most laser printers are) but it is also noisy after it finishes printing. For 5 minutes after each print job the printers cooling fan runs. This might not bother most people. However, I bought this printer for my home office and I sit right next to my printer while I make sales calls (due to having a small office, I have no choice). The humming noise of the fan was a major distraction. I couldn't deal with it.
That was really my major hang up with this printer. Other minor quirks include expensive refills for toner and a poorly designed manual feed that is not only finicky (sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't) but also very tough on envelopes.
Still, had the printer been less noisy, I probably would have kept it. It's a great value and a nice little printer if you van live with the noise factor.
