| surferdude7's Full Review: Samsung TSL3095WHF 30 inch TV |
The Samsung TSL3095WHF is a 16:9 (WideScreen) direct view CRT that displays 1080i (i = interlaced scan) or 480p (p = progressive scan) video formats.
Even though this is a flat type screen it is still 21.4 inches thick and the overall size of the TV is 36.8 inches wide by 22.4 inches in height. Light it is not, this beauty weighs in at 132 pounds.
~~~ Some Terminology ~~~
HDTV High-Definition Television refers to the highest-resolution formats of the 18 total DTV formats, generally considered to be 1080i or 720p.
Interlaced Scan is the process of re-assembling a picture from a series of video signals. They split each video frame into two sequential fields. In NTSC video they display 30 frames or 60 fields per second.
Progressive Scan displays the entire frame in a single sweep at 60 full frames per second.
NTSC National Television System Committee established the North American 525-line analog broadcast TV standard around 60 years ago.
DTV Digital Television is what will be replacing NTSC in the near future.
WideScreen is considered the aspect ratio of 16:9. This basically breaks down to for every 9 inches the TV is vertical then it will be 16 inches horizontally. Our regular TVs have a ratio of 4:3.
~~~ The Connections ~~~
There are five video inputs in the back, one S-video input, three composite video inputs and one component video input that will accept 480i, 480p or 1080i video formats. Each of the five video input have stereo inputs with them.
There is only one RF signal input for an antenna or cable.
In the back there is one composite video output and stereo analog audio outputs.
There are audio outputs for a center speaker and two rear speakers powered by an internal 15-watt amplifier. Plus a pair of stereo audio line-level outputs used to drive an external amplifier for left and right external speakers.
In the front there is another S-video input plus a composite video input and stereo audio inputs.
~~~ The Remote ~~~
A very nice looking remote that is about 8.5 inches long with a flip-up cover, which hides some of the buttons that are not use frequently. The main buttons are in easy reach all the time.
It can be programmed to be used with a VCR, Cable Box and DVD player.
The remote feels good in your hand but I miss it not having any backlighting.
~~~ Audio ~~~
The Samsung TSL3095WHF includes a built-in Dolby Pro Logic decoder for turning your stereo into a five speaker surround sound. All you have to do is add a center speaker and two rear speakers that plug in the back of the TV to get the surround sound.
There are two speakers built in the front of the TV and two woofers in the back sloping at an angle to the top of the TV. Total output power for all the speakers are 45 watts.
The TV has a five band graphic equalizer built in to fine tune your sound. There are controls for adjusting the external center and rear speakers. There is a built in a headphone amplifier with tone and balance controls.
~~~ Other Specifications ~~~
Anti-Distortion/Anti-Glare Tube
Invar Shadow Mask
Velocity Scan Modulation
2 Tuner Picture-and-Picture
Zoom Mode
NTSC Standard Color
VHF 2-13 UHF 14-69
CATV 1-125
Antenna 75 Ohm F-type CATV/VHF/UHF
~~~ Overall ~~~
This TV has a lot of features with a retail price of $2500.
With the Pro Logic decoder built in all you have to do is add a center speaker and two rear speakers and run the wires. The 15 watts made for these speakers do a fair job when used with the built in speakers. Now this is not the true Dolby 5.1 sound, for this you will need to add a receiver and five speakers and one subwoofer.
The sound without adding any speakers is very impressive and loud. You can bring the volume up to full and hear just a little distortion, full volume is too loud for most people.
The color was great with three selectable color temperatures of Cool, Normal and Warm. I preferred the Normal over the other two. Using a DVD to watch a movie made a very impressive and beautiful colorful movie. Though I do miss not having a Dolby or DTS 5.1 sound system hooked onto this TV.
The Samsung TSL3095WHF can be set in the 4:3 ratio if you dont mind the black sides that it produces on the screen. Now when watching a show made in the 4:3 ratio the Samsung TV can set it to look like it is a 16:9 ratio with not much distortion.
I do like the Picture and Picture having half the screen for one channel while the other half is another channel.
A TV that has both Interlaced and Progressive scan is nice.
