LisaDo's Full Review: Mustek TwainScan 600 III EP Plus Flatbed Scanner
We bought this scanner as a package deal from the company we bought our computer from. It was one of those "free" scanners when you purchase an over-priced computer. I'll be honest, I was surprised the thing even worked, but it does, and does a decent job, too.
When my husband first installed the software that came with it, I was afraid I wouldn't be able to figure it out. It really wasn't that bad. You can go in and put the the scanner options on your desktop. It is a small box that sits on your screen with eight options on it. They are scan image, scan text, copy, fax, email, scan image to inbox, scan text to inbox and view inbox. I'll be honest, all I have used is scan text, scan image and copy.
The scan image works really well, but I have noticed that you are better off if you hit scan image and then hit the more control button so you can prescan and outline the image that you actually want scanned, not all of the black around it also. We have used it and just scanned without the prescan and ended up with a bunch of black around the picture. Then we would have to use another program to trim the picture up. It got to be a pain, so mu husband was messing around one day trying different things and found that out.
I have used copy once and it wasn't that great. Most of the page I was trying to copy, it was text and images, didn't copy at all. There were blank sections in the middle and a lot of the words weren't legible. I have not messed with this to much since then. It is easier to find a copy machine in a store while I am out. This is not a feature that we really need anyway, so we weren't to worried about it.
Scan text worked fairly well if I just needed to save something to the hard drive and email it later. It didn't work that great if I tried to print it out. Some of the words didn't show up, but I don't know why. This also isn't something we use often, so we didn't worry to much about it.
It works great for what we wanted. Something to scan pictures so we could email pictures of our son to family instead of buying 20 plus copies. It is easy to use and light weight. It doesn't take up to much room either. We have it on a table next to the desk with our hard drive. It's actually an end table. Both fit on this with room to spare.
I only recommend this if you really only need something to scan and send pictures. I haven't had much luck with text. It is pretty simple to use and has a manual on the software disk that comes with it, just in case.
