I received the Mustek 600 III EP Plus from my husband 2 years ago as a gift for Christmas. I had mentioned to him several times since we had purchased our computer, that I would like to one day purchase a scanner. I had recently began maintaining a website for Parents of Children With Cancer and needed something to scan pictures to post on the different member pages.
My husband found himself in Staples one day on a mission with my daughter & my son to purchase a Tax Preparation Software package as a gift for me, when they found themselves somehow in the "Scanner Aisle". My husband is not very computer literate (despite my best efforts), so I imagine he had his mind set on something inexpensive, yet durable looking. He later told me that one thing that attracted him about this scanner was the fact that Staples was offering a $20 rebate. The scanner was on sale for $79, brining the price down to $59 after rebate!
I was very surprised Christmas morning, when I was presented with a big huge box wrapped in shiny red paper. I had no idea what could possibly be in this box, as my husband very rarely catches on to the many "gift hints" that I throw at him. Never had I imagined, that in this box was a scanner!
The Mustek 600 III EP Plus was fairly easy to set up & install. Included with the scanner was "Mustek Scanner Solutions" software. This flatbed scanner is fairly easy to use - simply lift the document cover of the scanner; place the document face down in the upper right corner of the scanner, close the document cover; go into the scanning software & set up the scanning parameters & scan the document.
This scanner is fairly easy to operate, though it is quite noisy and pretty slow, particularly when scanning a large item, or something at a higher resolution. You cannot scan a picture, and remain online - which is unfortunate as it would be really nice if I could do both at the same time. Occasionally when scanning a picture, I have problems getting the scanned image to be anything less than blurry. This is quite frustrating, especially when the original picture was not blurry to begin with. I am not sure why this problem is happening, I imagine it may be something I'm doing wrong.
The Mustek 600 III EP Plus scanner has the following features:
* 8.5 X 11.5 inch scan area
* 300 dpi(H) X 600 dpi(V) optical resolution
* 100-4800 dpi resolution control
* 32KB scanning data buffer
* Brightness control and contrast control
This scanner is 17.3 X 11.8 X 3.4 inches in size and weighs 6.6 lbs. It does take up a fair amount of desk space though, luckily I have a large enough computer desk, that the size of the scanner does not bother me.
The quality of the documents scanned are good to excellent. We have not had any problems with this scanner whatsoever & it has held up well to well over 1 year of constant use. This scanner served it's purpose very well with me, however I am now contemplating purchasing a scanner that is a little faster & capable of producing higher resolution, better quality images.
I recommend the Mustek 600 III EP Plus to anyone looking for an affordable scanner. This is great for someone new to computers and scanners. The Mustek 600 III EP Plus is a good choice, when looking for a scanner to scan pictures or images for online auctions, personal websites, etc. Inexpensive in price, but with features that some of the more expensive scanners have - this is the perfect gift for a birthday, anniversary or other special holiday.
