ntucker1410's Full Review: Nuance Dragon NaturallySpeaking Preferred 7 Full V...
Several years ago I purchased Naturally Speaking V. 3, loaded it onto my computer, voice trained it, and found it inaccurate and slow. I gave up on it, figuring the technology was just not ready for prime time.
Now, I purchase Naturally Speaking Ver. 7. The good news is that the accuracy and speed have vastly improved. The bad news is that when you install it, Internet Explorer suddenly can't function properly or at all. After figuring out that my new install of Naturally Speaking was the culprit from digging around their web site, I discover the fix to get IE working again is to download a 35 meg file, perform an export of my user files, and reinstall using the new file. Simple enough, only it didn't work simply at all. The new installer asked for my original disk - after the installation, which then created an error, which corrupted it (I guess). I spent hours and hours on this. Finally, after uninstalling all of it, reinstalling my original program from disk, then reinstalling the downloaded upgrade, the thing seems to be working again. But guess what, Internet Explorer still isn't. I called Scan Soft's tech support line (you get 1 free tech call, after that it's $19.95 per "incident") and got to listen to hold music for about a half hour before giving up.
I imagine that their tech line is jammed because there are a lot of people like me out there angry and wishing they'd never purchased it. I've wasted about a day on this. My advice - don't get it until this has all been worked out and Scan Soft improves its customer service.
