I recently purchased the Schwinn SC900 Double Jogger, and I can't imagine life without it! When my son was born my husband and I realized we would need to buy a double stroller. Our daughter, who was 2.5 yrs old at the time, still liked to ride in the stroller and often took naps while we were out, so we knew we would need something that could accommodate a newborn and a toddler comfortably.
I never even considered buying a side by side, never mind a jogger. I thought that they were too wide, and they didn't seem that easy to maneuver inside malls and stores, where I do most of my walking. We originally purchased the Graco Duoglider Air 7936, which got the job done, but was a little difficult to push with one hand. As most parents know, getting the kids to both sit and stay in the stroller is wishful thinking, so being able to navigate with one hand easily is a necessity. We lucked out when we bumped into a woman, with kids similar in age to ours, with the Schwinn SC900, and we set out to buy one immediately. It was the best purchase we've ever made.
We refer to it as the SUV of strollers! Pushing it is a breeze, thanks to the front swivel wheel, which also locks in place when traveling over sand or gravel. The 12" and 16" front and rear air tires make for a smooth ride, and are best inflated to 25 psi. We found taking the stroller to the gas station and inflating the tires there was a lot easier than using a bicycle pump.
We liked that the seats not only fully recline, but they recline independently of each other, important with an infant and toddler. The only thing about the recline is that it works like a drawstring, which can be tightened or loosened to recline the seats, and you need both hands to do so. The seats have a weight capacity of 50 lbs per seat, with 5 point seat belts and padded seats, which can be cleaned with a wet cloth. We've only had the stroller for about a month, so I'm not sure how comfortably it would accommodate a newborn, but our 6 month old loves it, as does our 3 yr old. The foot rests are not adjustable, but the foot rest has enough room for 2 toddlers. The maximum height of a child should not exceed 38", which if exceeded could pose a hazard to your child's feet getting caught in the front spokes of the tire.
Another feature that we liked was the front belly bar, which the kids seem to enjoy sliding under and climbing over. My 2 yr old niece often wants to sit in our stroller instead of her own because ours is more fun. Believe me, having a stroller the kids want to sit in is a plus! The sun canopy is large and has a sunroof for easy viewing, but it could be a little bigger, and it would be nicer if there were two separate canopies for each child.
Storage on the stroller isn't great, but it isn't that bad. There is an under seat storage basket with enough space to hold blankets, jackets and small bags, but not a diaper bag. There's no parent console or kid's cup holder, but there is a rear pocket that will hold keys a water bottle and a baby bottle. We actually found a good solution to this. To all you parents who are looking for cup holders for your strollers, look no further! There is a company called Chariot Carriers(www.chariotcarriers.com)that makes jogging strollers, bike trailers etc., and they make something called a hydration kit. Unlike other bicycle water bottle holders, where the cage must be screwed into the frame of the bicycle, this hydration kit does not require hardware to mount it to the frame. It comes with a parent cup holder and a kid's cup holder that can be mounted to the side of the stroller frame for easy access. We purchase two of them, and they work perfectly, and because there's no hardware required, they can be removed easily if needed.
We thought the width of the stroller would make it more difficult to maneuver in small spaces, but it was not any more difficult than trying to navigate a tandem front and back stroller. Don't get me wrong, tight spaces can be a pain, but we don't even attempt anything that looks smaller than a doorway. The stroller is easily folded with one hand, but it is rather heavy and a bit bulky when folded. Having said that, it does fit easily into our SUV and we still have room for a single stroller to fit in the trunk too.
The only other complaint I have about the stroller is that it doesn't have a hand brake, only a rear foot break, which works fine, but a hand brake would have been nicer when walking down hill.
All in all I love this stroller! I would highly recommend this stroller to anyone who's interested in purchasing one. We live in Canada, and because the stroller was on backorder on line, we drove to Buffalo to pick one up. It was well worth the drive and wait in customs! The cons are only minor ones in comparison to how easy it will make going out with the kids!
