| triple_irons's Full Review: Sharp AF-R60DX Thru-Wall/Window Air Conditioner |
Ok, its summer again, killer heatwaves and record high temperatures all over. If youre without solid AC action of some sort, youre in bad shape because a floor fan isnt going to do it and sleep doesnt come easy in the heat.. Realistically, I cant wait until midnight for the temps to come down enough for sleep with nothing but a fan on, and thats the truth for the high desert region here in Nevada. Unfortunately, this unit sits in the living room, floor fan in the bedroom. I bought this unit last year when after returning a defective 8000 BTU model, the wife talked me into saving $50+ bucks and buying this smaller unit, promising the larger unit the next summer when we would move the smaller unit (this one), into the bedroom. Well guess what, I got laid off and now we cant afford that larger unit, so the AF-R60DX is being overtaxed again as it is called upon to cool a room that is beyond its capacity, a 13x15 foot living room, when really hot out (100° +) I find myself standing directly in front of the unit, all three fans maxed out energy saver off.
After getting the unit home, to test the cooling power, I first installed the unit in our 10x12 ft bedroom (where it will eventually go) and the unit performed superbly, cooling the entire room down in less than 1/2 an hour. The main portion of our time is spent in the living room, thats why the unit is currently installed there. (I dont go to sleep til one or two in the morning anyway, and exactly the opposite of me, my wife likes the heat and sleeps just fine with a floor fan going.) With that background established, I can move on to the details and operation of this particular unit, as room size isnt a factor in using the different functions.

Moisture removal:
This unit has a built in dehumidifier function that removes moisture from the air in your room, honestly, I cant tell you how well it works because the humidity here is well, high dry desert.
Filter:
Slides right out from the side of the unit. Either vacuum or wash in clean water, if especially dirty, detergent, carefully rinse with clean water and soft cloth dry.
Remote Control
All praise to the remote, every function can be accessed and controlled with the remote.
Comfort Touch Controls
No buttons, knobs or dials here, minimal pressure on keypad-like pads (buttons on remote) activates temp control, three fan speeds, delay timer 12 hours on/off, sleep/wake-up control option. LCD screen temp readout. About the temp control, you may adjust the value up or down however, it doesnt control the actual temperature of the unit itself, what happens is whatever temp you have set, is the temp it will take the room to be for the unit to start cooling. When room temp drops below the setting, cooling stops. Example set the temp to 80° if the room temp is above 80° the unit will come on until the room is back to 80°
Energy Saver Setting
The units thermostat automatically controls cooling and the fan automatically stops when the compressor is not operating. (too hot for that here)
Library Quiet
Shhhhhhhhh, what? I still have to turn the TV up a little when I run the thing, otherwise a nice relaxing hummm.
Four way adjustable air vents
Whoa, its got an up/down, side/side lever.
INSTALLATION
The instruction manual is complete, with instructions easy to read and follow. Unfortunately, due to the type of windows (horizontal sliding, no sill) in our apartment, typical installation as per the manual was impossible. I had to fab up installation with a piece of 1/2 inch material that keeps the unit wedged in the window, (a regular McGyver I am).
Battery Included
How nice of them.
Durable
Whenever Im home, and whenever its hot out, this thing is running on max, and thats a minimum of 6 hrs a day, all last summer, and since the end of May this year. Its become a workhorse and is still going strong as it did when I bought it 2 yrs ago.
Recommendation
If needs are cooling a bedroom, or smaller area than 15 ft square, this unit will fill the bill, and fill it at a decent price. Using this unit in our living room, not achieving the cold temps I desire, (70°) the unit (teamed with a floor fan) still makes the room comfortable. When we finally get a bigger unit and move this one to the bedroom where it belongs, we will get another Sharp
