| bowdidge's Full Review: Sharp AQUOS LC-37HV6U 37 in. HDTV-Ready TV |
We just bought a Sharp 37" LCD 37HV6U a couple days ago. So far, we're stunned. The picture's wonderful even with our s-video-only DVD player; I'm seriously questioning whether I really need to upgrade to a progressive scan DVD player. A wide screen movie's image is at least twice as big as our old 24" set, and this screen's half the weight. For watching DVD's, it's wonderful. At first, I worried regular TV looked too horrid for such a cool TV, but I found the subtle stretch setting easily made a regular TV image fill the screen without distortion I could detect. I also found the set gave a much better regular TV image when driven straight from cable than from the cable box.
Negatives, all minor:
1) Although the speakers on the bottom of the screen are supposed to be removable, the manual specifically warns you against removing them if you're using the stand. This was really annoying for us as we have a surround sound system with its own speakers.
2) Having the separate A/V breakout box is nice; although you still need to run two cables from the display (one for the large video cable, another for AC power), it's nicer than running cables for each A/V device up to the display. The box does take up scarce space below our set and requires another AC plug.
3) Even if it's smaller than a plasma screen, and insanely thin, it's still a big TV. It overwhelms our 1960's living room, and is bigger than our fireplace. I'll probably be taking it back and replacing it either with the 32G4U 32" Sharp (with speakers on the side) or 30HV6U 30" with speakers on the bottom. I love the screen for movies, but I'd prefer it not to be the first thing our friends see when they walk in the door.
