My co-worker has a new Sharp Calculator. Since our first names are the same, I teasingly suggested she tag the calculator with the name "Dawn". But she's wise to my ploy and wants this calculator all to herself. Calculator envy ... who ever would have thought I'd have calculator envy.
Description
This is an attractive calculator with large, easy-to-press buttons. The calculator measures 4 1/4" wide x 6 3/4" long. When flat, it measures about a 1/2" deep, and when the plastic kick stand is opened, the calculator sits on an angle with the highest point measuring 1 3/4" tall. (The kick stand is 1" wide by 3" long and lays flush against the bottom of the calculator when not in use.)
The rubberized buttons have a nice feel to them, and the large surface area makes them easy to press without accidentally hitting other buttons. In addition to all the expected number keys, this machine also has a double-zero (00) key. The calculator also has the usual function keys (add, subtract, multiply, divide). There is a grand total key, percentage key, 4-button memory function ... and something I have not seen before. This calculator has two Tax keys to help calculate tax.
I have always liked solar calculators. The solar panel on this machine is located beneath the large LCD display. The LCD display can show up to ten numbers and is easy to read. (The LCD window is 3/4" tall x 3 1/4" long, and the numbers are 5/8" tall.) Another great feature is that this machine also runs on batteries in case the light source isn't strong enough to activate the solar battery.
A rubberized strip runs around the outside edge of the calculator. This makes the machine less likely to accidentally slip from the hand. Not only is this feature practical, but it adds style to the calculator. On the bottom of the machine are four small rubber feet to keep this calculator non- skid on a flat surface. The calculator is light-weight, too, at only 5.6 ounces.
Using the Calculator
The different colored buttons on this calculator add a fun look to the machine. The numbers and typical function keys (ex: add, subtract, multiply, divide, decimal point, right shift key) are a gray color. The CCE button, which clears entries, is red. The memory and grand total buttons are blue, and the two tax keys are yellow.
To turn the calculator on, press the "On" key (also the CA key). I'm going on the assumption that those reading this review are familiar with the everyday functions of a calculator, so I won't explain how to perform simple math using this machine. I have to say how much I appreciate the double-zero key. When adding a list of numbers with double zeros, this key saves keystrokes and time. The Right Shift Key (an arrow) erases the last number entered in a string of numbers.
I always like a memory function in a calculator. This calculator has the traditional add to memory, subtract from memory, recall memory and clear memory buttons. The memory function allows the user to enter figures and do additional calculations on the side without disturbing the numbers in memory.
The Tax buttons are helpful. First the tax rate has to be set in the calculator. The tax rate can be changed at any time if needed. The Tax and -Tax buttons allow the user to calculate total costs either with or without the tax.
The calculator also has an automatic shut-off feature. If the calculator is left unused for seven minutes, it will automatically power down.

Battery Replacement
Even though this calculator is solar powered, it has a battery so that the calculator will operate in low-light conditions. This battery can be replaced. There are six small Phillips screws on the back of the calculator that need to be unscrewed. Remove the back of the calculator and then replace the button battery.

Considerations
When purchasing this calculator, keep in mind that it will not fit in a shirt pocket, though it will tuck nicely into a backpack, totebag or briefcase. Also, if you need a printout from a calculator, then this machine is not for you.

My co-worker generously allowed me to use her Sharp Calculator. I liked it enough that I purchased one for myself and have been using it for four years. This calculator has been great.
