I bought the Sherwood RVD-9090R on 8/4/00 when it went on a blowout price sale at Frys, for $227, and couldn't resist the bargain. I bought a 6090R a week before, also on sale, but decided to return it because it does not decode DTS. I was fooled by a misleading DTS logo on the front panel. Upon close examination (at home), it said DTS ready, which means you could add an external DTS decoder and feed it to the 6-input. That's pretty sleazy, and unlike Sherwood. Sherwood is made by Hai Tai, Korea's #1 high quality assembly plant, used by many big Japanese brands (who prefer we think they are made in Japan).
The Sherwood RVD-9090R does decode DTS, and has very clear and ample sound. It also has OSD on screen display, a feature usually reserved for higher end A/V receivers, but starting to become standard on mid priced models. It has a sleep timer, and a very easy to use receiver. If you have recently upgraded to DVD player, this receiver is perfect--provided you intend to get all the surround speakers. It has the required Dolby Digital settings that allow fewer than the full 5.1 speakers to be used.
I recommend it totally, but for the following reservation.
The remote control does not duplicate all the buttons on the front panel, which are needed during initial setup. After setup, it is not an issue. However, a big limitation is that the remote has no learning capability. Rather, it has the buttons for controlling other SHERWOOD product which DIGI LINK II or III compatible. It therefore cannot turn the other brand units of your system on or off with a macro "one touch" button. If you own a univeral remote that can be programmed for this receiver, there is no problem.
A friend told me that the reason for the price reduction was that Sherwood had a reorganization that required that the US distribution raise some cash fast. Their loss is our gain. It will definitely
make room in the warehouse way for the next year products.
