koihoshi's Full Review: Sierra Sports Viper Racing for Windows
One day I was walking through the store looking for the latest greatest game and all of the sudden I found myself staring at this box with a viper on it. I thought "A game with nothing but vipers?" and couldn't help but snag it right off the shelf.
Believe it or not the game was only $12. What I found inside what one of the funnest games still to date.
The first thing I noticed about the game was that you could do anything to the car that you wanted. You could repaint it, put your name on it, logos, anything, you could totally recolor and remake the viper to look exactly how you wanted it with no restrictions.
Second thing I noticed was that this game had the ability to set up the suspension, gearing, ride height, and in single player even upgrade and add parts to the car. So lets think for a minute, completely customizable viper with fully customizable race settings as well? What else could this game have?
For all of you who can't play a racing game without using the "Manual Transmission" in the game because it just isn't real enough without it.... you'll love this game because not only can you do a Manual Transmission in the game but it includes the clutch too! Now you can do all of those great stunts that you couldn't do in other games because it lacked actually manipulating the clutch too!
3 different physics settings as well, from easy to normal to realistic. This means that you can do anything from slide around a corner at an unrealistic speed using your e-brake in easy (arcade mode) to having to slow down or take those corners at the peak of your car's ability in "Realistic" mode.
The graphics believe it or not are excellent for the game price, it just can't be beat. The graphics and ability that you have in this game are just unbelievable. Not only that but it isn't like most games where the level is completely restricted, no... this game also has levels that are spread out and wide, and also open. Thats right, an OPEN track, that means if you get bored or need to take a short cut you can cut through the dirt, rock, or go climb a hill.... the possibilities are endless as far as what you want to do in this game. Including these great levels and graphics are a very well done car model that also reacts to car damage. So this means that if you are doing 150mph in the desert and happen to see a cactus and can't manage to get out of it's way you'll find that the front of your viper has managed to make a perfect curve in the hood. Also reacting to this damage is the wheels as well, so if you end up by some chance oh lets say "launching" your viper over a small hill, and trust me, it can be done... your suspension will bottom out and most likely one or all of your wheels will react to this. These are all great features to add to the game, but you can turn them off if you want to just play around or make it easy on yourself if you are new to the game.
The sound is great as well. The cars don't sound cheesy, in fact it sounds fairly well unlike some games that will make a viper sound like a blender.
Multiplayer is included! Thats right! Now you can customize your viper, set it up, and then go show off to your friends over a Modem Connection (direct dial up) or over LAN (local area network *ipx connection*).
Artificial Intelligence in this game is very professionally done. The other computer drivers WILL look out for themselves and react fairly quickly to your driving if you attempt to get too close to them or side swipe them but this can also be used against them... Either way this makes the level of competition in the game more difficult as it progresses, which will add some fun to your viper runs.
A few things that may annoy you in the game are the following:
Car Damage - Unfortunately the only problem with the car damage is that the car will eventually have small glitches where you may be able to see through the car if its damaged enough, in some spots that is. However chances are you will rarely see this unless you are an absolute pro at wrecking.
Cheats - Unfortunately in this game it is very easy to cheat as the option to cheat is listed in the menu itself, while this may not harm you if you have the cheats off it is possible for other players to turn them on in Multiplayer and you will find that some people will make the dirt turn into pavement, making them able to go offroad where you can't and get ahead of you or shooting a small soccerball that can flip your car at 150mph.... Then again some people enjoy this, it is just my personal opinion that it may cause conflict in multiplayer on a player vs player basis.
Race Tracks - You'll also find that almost every track is absolutely great to race on! However, you'll also notice that there are a limited amount of tracks to race on.
