I bought this lens, Howard with your review for help!!!! (Reply to this comment)

Howard,
While I was down in Florida over Christmas, I tried out a barely used version of this lens at Beach Camera in Daytona Beach. After reading your review and successfully negotiating the asking price from $245 to $185, I bought it.
This has turned out to be a wonderful bargain and for many of the reasons cited in your review. Your expertise and quality of reviewing have shone through again and were invaluable in assisting me with my buying decision.
Many, many thanks for the "free" assistance and the professionalism of all of your reviews.
I'll be posting my review here of this lens shortly.
Cheers,
Paul Connors

Howard Creech, to the rescue again! (Reply to this comment)
by colonialpara, in Electronics
Hi Howard,
I'm down in FL visiting my parents and visited my dad's local camera store (Beach Camera, Daytona Beach) and the owner just happened to show me a used version of this lens (very little usage, I might add). I was impressed with it in the store and am giving very serious thought to buying it. Now, with your review available, I am able to make a positive decision in favor of this lens. My only problem now is, the store owner wants too much for the lens, i.e. $245 (and no warranty). In the stores in NYC (esp. B & H Photo), this lens can be had for $299.00 NEW.
I am going to try to negotiate him down below $200 and then buy this thing.
Many thanks again, For your thoroughness and professionalism. Henceforth, before I consider buying ANYTHING photographically related, I am checking for your comments here at Epinions.com
Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
(Not politically correct, I know).

Re: Sigma and Tamron lenses . . . (Reply to this comment)

Steve, Thanks for your comment. I haven't noticed any particular "slowness" in AF with this lens. I try to avoid lenses with more than a 3x zoom factor (they just get too complicated and the tradeoffs become too great to be acceptable) I have used a couple of Tamron lenses, and found them (like the Sigmas and Tokinas) to be a very good value.

Sigma and Tamron lenses . . . (Reply to this comment)
by viper1963
I had nothing but problems with a Sigma 28-200 lens. It kept on making my Canon EOS 1N displays battery check. Canon said it was because the lens electronic diaphragm on the lens was not opening/closing correctly. Well, I moved onto Tamron. Same problem but the focusing was tremendously faster.
The folks at Canon said you have to expect slower focusing time because Canon did not give up their software rights to the lens so Sigma and Tamron had to develop their own software - which tends to slow down the autofocusing time.

Thanks a lot for the well written and in-depth article. I have been looking high and low for an affordable mid range zoom and your Epinion is very helpful to me.
Thanks again,

Re: Wish more SLR buyers considered this lens (Reply to this comment)

Dave, Thanks for your kind words. "Street" shooting is my number one photographic passion.....too many "artistic" influences (Frank, Davidson, Cartier-Bresson, et al)
in my mis-spent youth I guess.

Howard,
Sigma's lenses are great values and this is another one. Good job on this review. I think I totally got jaded in this mid-range focal length after nearly ten years of shooting with nothing but a 28mm and 50mm lens. Today I rarely shoot in these ranges. BIG BAD ADMISSION.
You've made a compelling reason to get a decent mid-range zoom. Its constant f/2.8 aperture and some fast film might make it a joy to shoot "street" shots sans tripod again. Haven't done that since shooting Ektachrome 200 with a 50 f/1.4. This Sigma would be a first choice.
Good job.
