atara's Full Review: George Foreman GR10AB "The Champ" Sandwich Maker
I'm a complete kitchen moron, and this grill was a godsend. My mother got it for me for Christmas, and it has become a staple in my food preparation.
I am someone who has screwed up frozen pierogies, so anything I get for the kitchen has to be simple and just about idiot-proof. I had seen the informercials for the grill, and I was intrigued. So when I got one for Christmas, I tried it out right away.
What can't this grill do? I've used the grill to make bacon, chicken breasts, hamburgers, steaks, and pork chops. And let me tell you - it makes the best toasted cheese sandwiches I've ever made. Before the grill, my toasted cheese sandwiches were always soggy and unevenly cooked. Now, I get toasted cheese that's cooked all the way through and toasted evenly - and it's not soggy! What a concept!
Another boon (for me, anyway) is how easy it is to cook stuff. You throw it on, let it sizzle for a few minutes, and it's done. There is no complicated set of steps to use the grill, and everything you cook comes out tender and juicy. I did have to twiddle around with how to make bacon on the grill, however. The bacon usually ended up soggy, and if I left it on for longer it ended up burnt. So I fell back to my mother's old trick of using paper towels to drain the bacon after cooking.
Now that I've had a chance to use the grill, I wish my mother had gotten me the larger grill. But since I hardly ever cook for anyone other than myself, the small grill is just about the perfect size.
My biggest complaint about the grill is the trouble in cleaning it. The surfaces are nonstick and wipe off easily; if anything sticks to the grill you just heat it up again for a few moments and wipe - the stuff will come right off. The problem is with getting the grill really clean. It seems like every time I use the grill, I spend a long time wiping crumbs and grease out of the nooks and crannies in the back of the grill and out of the hinge. If the cooking surfaces were removable and submersible, it would make the job a lot easier.
Definitely recommended, especially for cooking clods like me.
