That's right -- just add what may seem like a trivial amount of Smirnoff 80-Proof Vodka to just about any kind of drink, and you'll have yourself one highly intoxicating beverage. Smirnoff can be used as a base for just about any kind of mixed drink you can think of -- sweet or sour, hot or cold, weak or strong. The number of things with which Smirnoff can be mixed in order to provide a nice drink with a little kick is almost amazing.
Let's face it -- most people don't start out as liquor connoisseurs. What I mean by that is that the first few times you drink alcohol (and I'm not talking about wine at communion), it probably won't be an expensive liqueur or a snazzy mixed drink. Most people start out with beer, cheap wine, or perhaps poorly-mixed daiquiris or margaritas. If you're still in that stage, as are some students for all six or seven years of their college careers, then Smirnoff vodka is a great liquor to have around. I've had many mixed drinks, for example, which are supposed to be made with rum, but which were made instead with Smirnoff vodka. Perhaps they didn't taste exactly the same as they should have, but my inexperienced taste buds couldn't tell the difference.
If all you're looking for is a good time, then Smirnoff 80-Proof Vodka can definitely help you there. While some people prefer drinks that actually taste good, there are many people out there who drink strictly to get drunk. Drinking unadulterated doses of Smirnoff will certainly help you do that. While I have taken Smirnoff straight on a couple of occasions, I wouldn't recommend it. Aside from the fact that it burns -- and not in a good way -- you'll also be taking in far more alcohol at once than is a good idea for most people. If you're an alcoholic, then you can probably handle it, but it will still taste bad.
I've seen some rather poor ratings on Smirnoff Vodka here on Epinions, ostensibly because it doesn't "taste good." Well, I'll definitely concede that fact, but I don't think that's something that's specific to Smirnoff. I mean, vodka pretty much just tastes bad. Yes, there are cheaper versions, but the only real difference I've noticed from one vodka to the next is how overpowering it is when mixed with other liquids. The cheaper ones tend to mix horribly, causing, for example, a strawberry daiquiri to taste like strawberry-flavored vodka. However, I haven't found that the most expensive ones mix significantly better than the mid-range ones such as Smirnoff.
All in all, I would say that Smirnoff 80-Proof Vodka is a good liquor to have around, no matter what size bar you have. At about $10 for a 750 mL bottle, it won't hammer your wallet, but it's still not the really cheap stuff. Particularly if you like mixed drinks, Smirnoff 80-Proof is a cost-effective way to go, without sacrificing too much in smoothness.
