craig189's Full Review: Soldiers: Heroes of World War II for Windows
I am a World War II buff. I fully admit it. I enjoy watching the programs on The History Channel about WWII. I enjoy reading books on the subject. Most of all, I love playing computer games that deal with WWII themes.
While at Game Stop in the Smithaven Mall in Lake Grove, NY, I happened upon Soldiers: Heroes of World War II on the game rack. There are three soldiers, two tanks and a battleship pictured on the cover, which gives potential buyers the idea that this game is a first-person perspective "shooting" game. Unfortunately, the old adage holds true, and you just can't judge this game by its cover. Even the description on the back of the cover gives potential buyers the idea that it is a first-person perspective game.
This game is actually a strategy game. The object is to defeat the enemy by commanding yourself and a squad of men and artillery from an omniscient point of view. You look "down" on the battlefield, and decide which way to move. You see everything that is going on around you. You have a choice of several campaigns to play: Russian Campaign, German Campaign, Allied Campaign 1 (Project America), and Allied Campaign 2 (Road to Berlin). You have different objectives to complete in each campaign, so there is a good variety.
However, the shoddy graphics leave much to be desired. The graphics are absolutely horrible. I can't believe that this game was released in June 2004. The graphics are so amateur, that it appears as though this game is from the mid-90s. As you scroll around the screen, the graphics are very choppy. The graphics are also very small and hard to see: the soldiers, the tanks, everything. The player console is very difficult to figure out and use.
The controls aren't even that great on the computer. It can be just a point-and-click game, if you wanted to play it that way. There is really no thought process that goes into it whatsoever. You always know that you are playing a computer game. I like video games where I can "get lost" in them, such as Call of Duty.
The sounds are okay. From the accents of the soldiers to the various artillery sounds, nothing is spectacular. You can understand what is said in the game, but nothing really draws you in.
Rated "T" for teen, this game just does not hold my attention. I paid $34.99 for this game, and wish I listened to my girlfriend to buy The Simpsons DVD-ROM game for $19.99 instead.
Overall, I would definitely pass on this game. It is not worth the money. If you want to check out the website designated to Soldiers: Heroes of World War II, visit www.codemasters.com/soldiers. Apparently, this game has a huge following. I just don't know why.
