I love this laptop! I was always told to avoid Gateway systems, but after purchasing this system, I am now recommending Gateways to everyone I know who is in the market for a new computer!
I bought this system directly from Gateway. Online customer service was an absolute joy to deal with. They answered all of my questions quickly and accurately. I would definitely deal with them again!
I bought the Solo 1450xl model. It came with a 1.2Ghz Pentium III processor, 30GB hard Drive, 256MB RAM and a host of pre-installed software including Microsoft XP Home. I also have a floppy drive and a CD-ROM/CDRW combo drive that are internal. This system is truly a very portable desktop replacement.
This system was a much-needed upgrade from my "old faithful" Dell laptop. I wanted something faster, with more storage capability. I got that and much more with this system. I have a HUGE 14.1" flat-panel screen with a very clear and brilliant color display.
The keyboard is huge and now my fingers don't get cramps while I'm typing. I have always favored touch pads as opposed to track balls. I love this touch pad. It had a wide area to work with, and it's very responsive.
The size of the hard drive is phenomenal! I deal with a lot of digital music and picture files, as well as large document files so I really needed the large drive. I have had this system since June of 2002, and I still have about 20GB free!
This system is FAST!!! It used to take my old Dell almost 10-15 minutes just to boot up. This system? Not even 3 minutes. That's awesome for when I really need to access my files or get online quickly.
I have had excellent results with my CDRW drive! It is really fast in reading files, as well as writing to them. I will probably eventually upgrade to a DVD/CDRW drive. Right now, what I have is just fine!
My system came equipped with both an internal modem, as well as an ethernet card. I now access the internet via DSL, and I must tell you, I am zipping along on the internet now! I used to have to deal with dial-up service, on a very slow laptop. Surfing and downloading were not a treat-especially with a considerably smaller hard drive and smaller RAM. Now? I can say that I enjoy surfing the web and finally being able to participate in webcasts and streaming media. It's absolutely wonderful.
Overall, this system is one of the best purchases I have ever made! This system is lightweight, sturdy and chock full of features! You get a lot for the money! I plan to keep this system for a long time! When it is time for me to upgrade,all I can say is, Dude! I'm getting another Gateway!
