| jfcyr's Full Review: Rio Forge Sport (256 MB) MP3 Player |
At first I was very impressed with the Forge, it uses very nice menu and the display is very easy to read, but when the battery that came with the unit was at about 50% of power (from the display battery read out) the unit started shutting down during play, and would not turn back on. I changed battery, and tried to turn it back on, but no go... I have to wait over 10 minutes for the unit to turn back on. I was never able to get it to work once the battery is under 50% which give me only 6hours of music with one battery (I tried a couple of name brand batteries with the same result). I got use to that problem.
a couple of weeks after the warranty was over, I started getting a "updater" bug (player will not work because it thinks it's in firmware update mode) took out the battery for 20 minutes, turned it back on, and it worked for a while. after a week of this, even taking out the battery did not work, so I searched the web, and found that this is a very common problem (do a search for "RIO updater bug" and you will see that a lot of rio's MP3 players have this problem)
from a forum maintained by rio staff, the cause of the problem is a loose contact between the display and the control board that is caused by abuse! my player what never dropped or abuse and yet I have the same problem... go figure! On there web site they even say that this unit is build tough to take a beating, what a joke!
