| bowdidge's Full Review: Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-U30 Digital Camera |
The Sony DSC-U30 is my travel camera. It may not give me as much control over my images, or give me 4 megapixel images, but I can't imagine going anywhere without it.
The biggest advantage is size. The camera will fit in my jeans pocket, or I can carry it around my neck. It doesn't look like a camera, so I don't feel like a tourist. With my larger camera (an Olympus C-4040), I'll keep it in a knapsack out of sight; the Sony's always ready, and I'm willing to carry it everywhere. I carried this camera around Hong Kong and Singapore for two weeks; all my fun spontaneous shots were with this camera -- buddhist monks under an umbrella, surprise photos of my wife and I walking down the street, strange signs, or street scenes. I've also been surprised how often I'll hold it at arm's length and get a photo of us; its mirror ensures I actually get the photograph.
On all my travels, it'll survive a full day on a single charge of batteries; a 256MB memory stick easily held 14 days of photos.
There's times I still love the big, high-quality camera... but this is the one I'll reach for as I'm heading out the door.
