Pros: Solid player, likely to last a long time.
Cons: There are probably better ones out there but this one is perfect for me.
The Bottom Line: I'd say definitely go for this model unless you have a specific reason to go for something else. I even like the way it looks compared to most others.

| christpunchers's Full Review: Sony Walkman D-NF610 Personal CD Player |
Alright! I think it is finally time for me to give a review of this product. I got it for Christmas a number of years ago. I've been using it for at least four years and I still use it heavily on a daily basis, so I'd have to say that it is a pretty good product. I'm not at all reckless with it but I have accidentally tossed it onto concrete streets a handful of times. Plus, it has traveled with me on multiple occasions. I'd say it is fairly well beaten up but it still works like a dream and plays every CD I ask it to (unlike my stereo which will refuse a plethora of CDs, the walkman D-NF610 will play even some CDs that are too scratched up to play on my stereo -- although my stereo itself is rather old).
I don't keep track, but I would have to guess that I get a handful or more of full CD plays on the battery life. That would be around 6 hours. But I'm not certain.
I find the sound quality to be awesome (crisp, powerful). It also has a bass-enhancement function which can be good for some types of music no doubt but with my rock I tend to leave the bass-enhancement off. I use Sony earphones for listening. In the epic saga of this product being in use by me, I've had to replace my headphones a few times, and I don't even remember what the original headphones were like or how good they are. But my earphones are plenty loud.
It has good features although I admit I never bothered to comprehend what most of them are. So I guess I wouldn't rate the features as being exquisite. It has radio on it which I use occasionally. It also has "hold" function which is fantastic and I use it frequently. It stops the CD commands (like play, stop, next track) from unintentionally being activated. I use it for two things. One, when I am in class or putting it in a bag where the buttons might get hit so that it doesn't turn on and then run the batteries dead without me even knowing it (this is a particular concern because often times the headphones are unplugged so I wouldn't even be able to hear if it was running). The second use is for when I am taking a walk and listening to a CD from start to end, it is useful to put the hold function on and the shove the walkman in my pocket. The buttons won't get pressed despite being shoved in my pocket.
My one and only complaint on this product that has served me so well and so long is the fact that the "Hold" function does not work for the radio. If you have the hold function on, the CD won't be activated but if the radio button gets pushed then it will still turn on! This has inconvenienced me countless times and it always annoys me intensely because I feel like it shouldn't happen when the hold is activated. As far as I can tell, the radio does not take up as much battery as the CD function, but it's still annoying.
Before getting this device I got a generic CD-player from some generic company that I can't remember the name of. It was a little bit less expensive but it broke after a few weeks at most! I always believe in the idea that if generic products are as good as the mainstream, you might as well go with them. But in this case I'd have to say I've been convinced to go along with the big name of Sony because this product has treated me so much better than the generic counterpart I tried. I was swayed so much so, in fact, that I now have a Sony laptop. But that's beyond the point. My point is that it MIGHT be wise to go along with a bigger name for your portable CD-player (if anyone other than me in the world still uses one instead of an I-Pod). After all, what CD player you pick has an impact on every single CD you listen to. And if you're like me, then that is hundreds upon hundreds of plays. Extra money at this stage of purchase could (ideally) improve your music for the next 5 of more years, so that extra money is like adding a bit of good to every CD you own. And, to clarify, I say "ideally" not because I expect the product might break down, but because there still is the slight possibility that the more expensive product doesn't end up being better than the middle-of-the-road product.
Personally speaking, however, I would say that this product is extremely durable and is unlikely to be beaten. If I were you, I would buy this player and then invest in some high-tech earphones for ultimate experience.
