| eiapoce's Full Review: Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-P93 Digital Camera |
Hi, this is my fifth digital camera and my favorite after all. I have been using it for quite a while (6 months) and shot almost 5000 pics.
I don't want to make another "copycat" review as most of them are already good quality and some are just a copy of the instruction leaflet that comes with the camera. You deserve to know in dept the pro and cons of the camera.
PROs
1) The Camera is compact and uses just two ordinary AA cells. You get a 3x optical zoom and that's not bad.
2) Operating timings are very tight, the camera is fast! The menus are self-explanatory most of the times and the wheel makes changes in a breeze.
3) You can push it into advanced modes: It got me a while but finally with this camera I got to use aperture and exposition values using the Manual mode! On the other hand the camera is easy to use even for beginners.
4) Outstanding nightshots. If shot in manual mode you can set the aperture to be very long. With a stand in this way it is possible to take very detailed night pictures...
5) Unbelievable long battery life. The included batteries last up to 2 full hours using the camera... I didn't thruly test it. I can say with confidence that it lasts to me 2 days while for a comparison I would need four times the batteries to power my HP's (720) - And of course the batteries come with the camera.
6) EXTREMELY LOW NOISE - Dots in dark areas of the pictures are almost unnoticeable until you get to use ISO400 mode which is actually a bit extreme.
IN THE AVERAGE
1) Auto Focus is not granted in all conditions. No problems in daytime or clouds. But in darkness the auto focus light sometimes fails to give the sharp picture. Anyway this camera is in the average compared with the others I have been trying. Also if you shoot a subject that you can tell the distance there is a fixed focus mode that is adjustable and gives good results.
2) I don't like that it uses Sony Memory Stick and that to use the movie mode (DVD Quality) you have to get a MS Pro
BELOW AVERAGE - CONS
1) Some problem with the focus occurred to me. I brought the camera to a Sony assistance center. They explained me that for a compact camera some slight blurring at the edges is normal in close up shots due to optical aberrations.
2) Some soft image problem compared to other cameras. Most of those problems come from bad focusing, but some really look to be hardware/firmware dependant. Some photography sites state that it is due to the internal noise processing engine.
3) It would be better with the HP image processing - that's the only thing I miss from my previous cameras: I noticed that the colors from this camera come natural like. What I mean is that the post processing used by HP makes their images less lifelike but more appealing to the eye...
UPDATE
After 2 and a half years of intense use the flash of the camera broke. I don't know how it happened because it was lended to a friend. The camera had some marginal value left as I was able to sell it on ebay for 30 euros.
Please check carefully any sony purchase for the quality of the plastic used. They tend to be filmsy! This camera for instance experienced the failure of one of the plastic hingers of the battery compartment.
