thrca's Full Review: Sony DVP-CX985V Multi-disc DVD Player
I am a movie geek. I have hundreds upon hundreds of movies. Getting this seemed like the best idea ever. Boy, was I wrong.
Inserting 400 discs was easy. They fit nicely, although the unit is a bit deap (22 inches). A small dent in the loading bay indicates which slot is lined up with the number you have selected. I painted it grey because unless you have excellent lighting, you cant tell if you are putting it in the slot in the middle or +- one or two slots.
So then I started the auto-detect option, which I was totally psyched about. Maybe 25% were detected, after several hours of scanning. The other 75% took about 10 hours of typing in the painfully slow interface, which is almost as painful as using the interface at all. Some DVDs were incorrectly detected because they had crappy info encoded on them. If it auto-detects them, you cannot change the info if its wrong.
Short limitation of title space leads to many problems when you have those trilogies and such, like Lord Of The Rings: blah all show up as "Lord Of The Ri"
The remote is somewhat a pain in the butt because if you have it in explorer mode (required to navigate the crappy interface) it doenst control all the aspects of play functions (but some basic ones) so you need to switch the switch between explorer and dvd a lot.
You will not want to use the interface. Its painfully slow and very aggrevating to use.
On the positive side, the CD and DVD playback audio and picture quality is superb. It has Component, S-Video, and Optical outputs.
Its a pain when you rent movies. I actually keep a single loader DVD player and the changer, although I am selling this POS to get something hopefully with HDMI output and a serial port like the 777ES. To elaborate on the serial port, I bought this unit expecting to control it from a computer using DVDLobby (awesome software) which solves the crappy interface issue. This unit has no serial port, so cannot be controlled from a computer.
My suggestion is to avoid this like you would avoid driving your car into a live volcano. I dislike this product with the burning passion of 1000 suns.
