Pros: Very good, but watch for defects. Sony's service is poor.
Cons: One drawback is that you have to hit ZOOM to make HD channels expand.
I really loved this television for the first 3-1/2 months, until the picture tube died. That's right - 2 weeks after the labor warranty expired. I was hot. Keep in mind that this TV weighs over 160 pounds, which my wife and I lifted into a cabinet 3 feet off the floor. Now it had come to out.
I called SONY and they gave me the standard "unplug it for a minute, and turn it back on". That of course did not do anything. I asked what they could do for me. They had me call the only authorized repair shop in my area (22 miles away) and get them to diagnose it. The repair guy identified the tube. After a few calls, Sony agreed to cover the labor charges, but I would have to pay the repairman's trip charge to come out and replace the picture tube (roughly $100). Tired of arguing, I relented so I could get my TV back.
Sony does NOT specialize in customer service. They make it clear that they dont need to. They did not return calls. The authorized repair shop (which in my view is the "face" of Sony since they are the only people you can go to) only does tube replacement on Wednesday nights. I had them come out at 6:30 pm the night before Thanksgiving. All in all, the experience was bad, but I got my TV back about 2 weeks after it crashed. Not bad I guess.
In my honest assessment, this is a very good product for the money - I just got a defective model, and I want everyone to know that Sony isnt perfect, and their customer service is poor. As for the product itself, the picture in high definition is outstanding. To give you an idea of the image quality, I can see the stitching on football uniforms when I watch games (Go Penn State!). The image can be adjusted easily. DVDs look excellent. There are 5 or 6 picture modes, (e.g. standard, vivid, etc.) that let you quickly adjust the picture for programming that is too bright or too dark. I think the sound from the TV speakers is adequate, but I connect my set to my average stereo receiver and get great sound.
One drawback is that HD channels appear with a black border on all sides. To correct this, you often have to hit the ZOOM button on the remote. Not a big deal, unless you are switching channels back and forth.
