awell's Full Review: Sony Grand WEGA KDF-60WF655 60 in. HDTV LCD TV
I did a lot of research ( 8 months worth) before choosing the sony over mits, samsung, hitachi, and toshiba. I went with this one for a couple reasons. First of all, DLP vs. LCD. Do you like coke or pepsi, miller or bud?? They both have a great picture so it is really up to your own preference. I chose LCD because, 1, I have a bright room and the LCD looks better in a bright room, 2, to me less moving parts means less chance of breaking and 3, the SD picture seems to be pretty poor on DLPs. The DLP does have much better black levels and a softer edge, but the other factors were more important to me.
If you watch sports, this is the tv. The first thing I watched after my hd was installed (directv is definitely the way to go, SD picture is way better than on comcast) was the Illini vs. Zona NCAA game and it was amazing!! There is no blur and the screen keeps up with the action, which I have heard can be a problem on DLPs. Anything in HD looks perfect and the SD is not bad. DVDs look great, but you really need a progressive scan player. The picture out of the box is pretty good, but I used digital video essentials to calibrate the picture and it really helped to soften the picture and improve the black levels of the set. I have seen people complain about the sound but I think it is pretty good ( if you have a surround set up it does not matter anyway). I would not recommend the extra money for the XS unless you really want the second hdmi input.
I got a good deal on the set at ABT...... $3400 for the tv and a four year warranty, which I suggest getting. No need to get the $700 stand. I got the Bello AVS-2601 ( they gave it to me for $75!!) there are plenty out there for $300 that will work fine. Invest in good cables, it makes a huge difference... I have all monster THX for component(DVD) and HDMI(satellite). The mark up is over 100% on most cables so get a deal on the wires when you buy the set. Make sure you have a room big enough. I sit about 14 feet from the screen which seems to be perfect. I do get a little screen door effect at times, but it is much more noticeable if you are really close. When I'm more than 15 feet away, I never notice it.
ALL IN ALL, I am very happy. I have had the tv a month and everyone that comes over says " Is that a Plasma" or what did you pay for that thing, 6-7 thousand? So if you are debating between this tv and others, trust me, this is the one you want.
