Sony, a long time industry leader among televisions has done it yet again. They have taken technology to a new extreme, and left all other TV manufacturers pondering as to what to do. With the newest and biggest release of the year, the Grand Wega, as Sony refers to it as, has taken the electronics industry by storm.
Projection televisions have definitely had their own set of flaws over the years. From the annoying glare from the very flimsy and highly reflective shields to the small viewing angles to the super huge prices. Plasma televisions seemed to be taking over but their prices stopped many from buying, so a decision had to be made; how to make a television that had a wonderful picture, and yet had a decent price.
Weighing in at only 100 pounds approximately, the Grand Wega is an LCD Projection Television, yes I said projection. I have never seen a picture as clear as the ones displayed on the screen. The picture is absolutely amazing. The picture is extremely sharp and well defined with absolutely no glare. When watching standard cable or satellite the television itself increases the detail to a Virtual High Definition which isn’t as detailed as High Definition, but surely comes closer than a DVD without Progressive Scan.
Anti-Reflective Screen
Every projection television has almost always had a horrible glare on the screen that made the quality of the picture less than desirable. This set however does not have the glaring problem. Sony incorporated a matted finish screen cover that distorts and visibly reduces the amount of glare allowing for a much more enjoyable experience.
Large Size – Small Price
Projection screens used to be super high priced items that only the wealthiest of people could afford. Not anymore! You don’t have to sacrifice a limb in order to obtain this beast. Most stores offer this set at an amazing $3699.99! With the picture that this set displays, it is well worth every single red cent.
Easy Maintenance
Maintenance is a breeze on this unit. The bulb is to last about 6000 to 8000 hours and replacing the bulb is nothing more than simple. There are two screws in the back of the television set, and all you have to do is remove the two screws, take off the shroud, and replace the bulb. Then you television is just as it was before. No more painstaking days waiting for some techie-type-dude to tell you that your projection guns are no longer working and that you need a $650 part and a $250 labor cost.
Higher than High Definition
This television is amazing in all aspects including resolution capabilities. Supporting resolutions up to 1480i which is even a sharper and more detailed version that the standard 1080i High Definition signal. This means that as future signals are introduced to the television scene, this television will be capable of processing all images properly with absolutely no problems.
Input / Output Performance
Whether you have DVI, Component, Standard RCA, or Coaxial connections, rest assured that you would not have any trouble connection to the source. You can actually hook up your computer to this television through the DVI connection, and support a plethora of screen resolutions. If you were to look at just the connection panel and nothing else you would automatically assume that this was a regular television set.
Sony has definitely surpassed all of my expectations when comes to a Projection Television. I never thought that I would prefer a projection set to an LCD or a Plasma Television / Monitor, but at this point, I wouldn’t settle for anything less.
