Great TV out of the box. Top notch picture quality if you're in the correct viewing angle. If you're outside the viewing angle you might as well close your eyes. Plenty of functions and the remote is a descent universal. When buying a Sony you're always paying a premium for the name, quality, and alleged reliability.
I guess most everyone who owns a Sony rear projection TV with a model number starting with KP either needs to throw it out or fix it after anywhere from one to three years. There are two chips that control the convergence. Convergence is lining up the red, green, and blue colors so they appear as one. If they don't line up correctly you will see the separate colors offset from one another. Not the way to watch TV, believe me. Most people are having the red color go out of convergence. There is only one chip that controls the red but you might as well have both replaced if that is the route you'll take. Supposedly the chips weren't designed to withstand the heat they are exposed too.
If your TV does go out of convergence cover up the bulb that is not converged and you can still watch TV without that color until you either repair of fix.
You can also try to call Sony. Don't expect to get too far though. I actually was happy with the service of the low level customer service. The lady I talked to was understanding of my issue and processed my complaint before sending to me the next level. The next level sucked in a nutshell. Not understanding at all and was unwilling to help out.
I've never had any issues with Sony before so never have had any experience with their customer service. A couple of years ago my Nikon Coolpix 5700 had an issue. Instead of neglecting the customer, they posted a service issue on their website and repaired the camera for free even though the warranty on the camera had expired. So this was the service I was expecting from a top notch company like Sony.
Do yourself a favor and don't buy this TV or any other Sony projection TV unless you like spending extra money for low quality. IMO a TV that costs more than a couple hundred bucks ought to last at least ten years.
