The Bottom Line: A bunch of Sony Baloney

While the set performed well, after 40 months of ownership my set has been diagnosed with a failing blue tube. For my 11/02 production set, blue tubes are no longer available from Sony, so my set which I paid $2,500+ for, is essentially worthless. Had they been available my service man predicted it would have cost about $700 to replace it.
There is apparently an FTC rule which requires manufacturers of TVs to provide parts for 7 years, after production of a particular model ceases, so after being informed of my sets problems, by the authorized Sony service center which diagnosed my set, Sony offered me $960 credit towards a new Sony TV. They reimbursed me for the cost of having the set diagnosed. I was able to get them to within about $200, about 12% over the best Internet price I could find for the set of my choice. They would not reimburse me for the cost of disposing of my now worthless 200+ lbs. TV.
If you have one of these and it goes bad, make sure to have a Sony authorized service provider, diagnose it. If you need any parts for your set aside from the blue tube, contact me
(ray916mn) as I'll probably gut the remaining good main components to try to get more value out of this TV.
