| Daxman's Full Review: Sony KV-27S42 27 inch TV |
The old TV just wasn’t working anymore. It lasted almost ten years and survived six moves, but its last couple of months was difficult. We had to put the TV (and us) out of its misery and buy a new set. So we broke down and bought one, of course we did not budget for a new set nor did we really now what kind of features we wanted. The only criteria we had in mind from the start was that it had to fit in the entertainment center.
We went to the local TV store and started comparing the 27” models. The store had several models to choose from, but in the 27” category it was limited to the Sony, JVC, Sharp, and a Samsung. The difference in price from the lowest to highest model was only $50, so we decided that price wasn’t going to be the final selling point. Whichever one had the best picture we would get.
Picture Quality
The Sony model had in my opinion the best picture quality. While the screen size is exactly the same size as my old TV, this one seems bigger. One difference is the screen is flat, not convex like my previous set. This helps when viewing the TV from an angle, the image is as vivid as looking straight on. Don’t let me give you the wrong impression that this is a thin TV like a flat panel LCD monitor. The TV is 20” deep; the screen is flat.
There are many ways to control how the picture looks on the TV. The obvious settings include: brightness, sharpness, tint, and color. The Sony has some preprogrammed settings for movies, sports, and various other shows. That is the first time I’ve seen this on a TV. As I’ve only had the TV for a few weeks, I did not change the settings very much so I don’t know how useful this feature will be.
Sound
The audio is typical Sony excellence. I was amazed at what I was missing. No, the TV is not hooked up to some monster sound system with surround sound, etc… its just the two 5 watt speakers that come in the TV. The sound really brings my kids’ Veggie Tales videos to life. They didn’t dance in front of the old TV, but they do now—coincidence, who knows. I know that I’m pleased with the fidelity of the system.
Inputs/outputs
The only thing I would like better on this TV is to have the A/V connections on the front of the TV. Unfortunately, they are on the back. As this model is on the low end of the Sony spectrum, you get:
1 video in
1 audio in
1 S video
1 audio out
If you get one of the other models in this Sony series, you can expect to have at least one more video/audio input and one additional S-video input. This will come in handy if you have a DVD player and a satellite dish. For my simple cable and VCR setup, the low end model works just fine.
Setup
The setup is easy. The hardest part was lifting the TV out of the box and putting it in the entertainment center. All you have to do is connect the cable and turn it on. You are now ready for up to 125 channels of TV fun. With a few more button pushes of the remote control, the TV is automatically programming the channels for you.
Verdict
I am amazed how far we have come with television technology over the past ten years. I purchased the low end model of the Sony line and have been very impressed. Let’s face it, you buy a TV for the picture and sound. This TV delivers both picture and sound at a competitive price.
