Before I began to write this review, I read a few others on the subject and was really amazed at the knowledge of some of the writers here. The only problem with the ones I'd read was that for the most part, I really didn't understand what I was reading. The terms they were using (from pixels to resolutions) are words that I don't use in everyday language when speaking about my TV. In the hopes that this review will not be found woefully inadequate, I give you my version of a review on the new Sony Wega Trinitron TV.
After lightening got our big screen TV that my parents purchased in 1990 and had handed down to me, we found ourselves with a tidy little sum to spend on a brand new television. My husband walked around stores like Circuit City and Sears with the precision of a brain surgeon. What is it about men and electronics? Stereotypical, I know, but how many times do I have to utter "I don't care, just pick one!" before we can go home!
After days of searching, my husband came up with a great solution. Instead of spending the whole sum on a huge TV, we would settle for a lesser sized television and get an entertainment system as well. A purchase was in sight and it was the Sony KV-32FS12. My husband acts like this is the best machine invented since the cotton gin, but frankly, Mr. Whitney, I'm not terribly impressed.
The Good, The Bad and The So-So
* This television is a monstrosity. It is a huge beast of a TV that weighs a ton. It was hard for my two grown men to lift it up and into our armoire cabinet.
* Flat CRT: The flat screen is supposed to be the newest and the best for picture quality. The screen itself looks neat, but as for picture quality, I don't see that much of an improvement from other televisions.
* Titanium Color: I really don't know what they call the color, it looks like a mixture of silver and gold, and I hate it. It looks tacky. My husband says that when he looks at the picture, he doesn't see the edges of the titanium television like he did when we had a black television. I can see the edges just fine.
* Front A/V inputs: These allow a quick connection for video games and camcorders. I do have to say that this is a great feature that we did not enjoy with our other television. My husband plays video games and it doesn't look so messy now that we can unplug the system and put it away instead of letting it stay on top of the television.
* Universal Remote: My husband treats this like the Holy Grail. We are not to toss this one to each other like we could the other one. We are to slide it gently across the couch.Bah! It's too complicated for me anyway. Just show me how to change the channels and lower the volume. I've heard tell of specific features like "favorites" and "parental controls" but truly, I do not use them. Like the TV, this remote is rather large.
* Energy Star: Now this bit of information I retrieved from the operating instructions manual. This means that my television is energy efficient, so this is a definite plus. I don't see much of a change in my power bill, though.
* No Picture In Picture capability: I may never have know what I was missing had I not read that darned operating instructions manual for this epinion, but now I feel gypped!
* Sleeper Timer: You may set the TV to go off at 15 minute intervals up to 90 minutes. I have done this on accident many times, so know that the feature works, but I can't say I could do it if I needed to. It's a great way to make the kids think that the television is haunted, too.
My husband just came in and read my review and now he is scandalized! He can't fathom how I could say anything was wrong with this television! I want you to understand that this is a fine television, perhaps better than most in its price range, but it's just a television. It isn't the "home theater" I was expecting. In our extensive search, we saw a lot of great and comparable (at least to my eye) television sets that were a good deal cheaper. I would recommend this television, but I'd rather have had the cash!
