Ok, now that I've familiarized myself with the product, I like it much better. The software that comes with the player (version 1.5 I think) makes you "check in" and "check out" your songs so that you cannot create more than 3 instances of it. BUT, in the new version 2.0, that whole feature has been scrapped! The software is much less restrictive. In order to download the new software, you must have your Serial # which is on the package, not the unit. Write this down somewhere before it ends up in the trash!

Also, while the unit may run for days on a single battery, it tends to suck them dry while burning. At first I thought it was the software hassling me about copying some of my "backed up" Mp3s. Turns out the battery didn't have enough juice to burn and that was giving me errors. So make sure you use a good, fresh battery before you start the burn.
I just received my MZ-NE410 today. After installing the software, I had my hopes up for a portable music player with cheap, durable media. And that's what I got. Sadly, Sony ruined it for me by preventing me from being able to freely write MP3's and WMAs to the player.
As many have mentioned, the software that comes with this is awful. And I mean AWFUL. It's clunky. It is hard to navigate. It doesn't do it's job well at all. To top it all off, it seems to be the only software you can use.
When I read the reviews, I thought to myself, "So the software sucks. That's no problem. I've got other software." The thing is, Minidisc players are not like portable MP3 players or even CD burners. Windows does not "see" the MD player when it is plugged in. It does not show up under My Computer like any other drive would. The only way you can get data on and off the player is with the provided software. You're stuck with it.
I did manage to get a couple of songs onto it and they sounded great.
