| crashingatmtu's Full Review: Sony Net MD Walkman MZ-NF610 Personal MiniDisc Pla... |
Ive owned the MZ-NF610 Minidisk for almost a year and a half now. Before buying this particular device I looked into some other portable music players (i.e. the Apple ipod) for a solution to my musical needs. I chose this Walkman over the ipod because of the storage capacity of the disks and the battery usage. The reason I chose this Minidisk over another was the availability of a remote while still keeping a reasonable price.
After having the Walkman for a reasonable amount of time Ive become aware of almost all of its faults. Most reviews Ive read have said that the weather channels were useless, and I would agree with them. I should mention that I live in a fairly secluded area where the Weather channels along with the T.V. channels are non-existent; however its probably better in the long run for me that I dont have the option to use them. One thing that this Walkman doesnt do is record form a microphone like its older counterparts. However Sony does have this feature on their top Minidisk units. It would have been helpful to have in this model. When I first received the software package (Sonic Stage) that came with the Walkman I had a hard time using it at first, and it was very discouraging, and difficult to understand the processes you have to go through to send music to the Walkman. One aspect that contributes to the downside of Sonic Stage is that you have to optimize your music files into a specific format which takes up processor time whereby slowing your computer to a crawl. Although to this day Im still finding new things that it can do that I didnt know it could do. One thing that I have noticed mostly during the warmer climate days, and while I have the Walkman in my jeans pocket is that when it gets to warm it just stops playing and freezes up. Im not sure if its just mine or if there are others out there with the same problems. So if you like uninterrupted music this might affect your decision. Now the main unit has a line in for optical/digital transfers, except you dont get a digital cable with your Walkman.
For most of the time the Walkman stays in my coat pocket with the remote clipped somewhere close to my hand. Both the remote and the main display on the Walkman are not backlit such as on the Net MD Walkman MZ-N10 making it difficult to use in the dark. For the most part this is not a major problem. Along with the software you also received an AC adapter, and USB cable. The USB cable allows you to transfer at up to 32x, a normal CD can be downloaded to your Walkman in about seven minutes, not including time for optimization. This ability to send music files from my computer to the Walkman via the USB port more then made up for the optimization process. The software once learned makes it easy to organize your media into one place. One other plus for the software is the ability to look up information about your songs. This can come in handy when you forget song titles or an album name.
Today the storage capacity for a Minidisk is around one gigabyte making it possible to put around thirty-two hours of music on a single disk. A normal capacity disk is about 5 hours of music in the LP4 mode. This is the highest compression rate for MZ-NF610 Walkman. Minidisks also allow you to write and rewrite over a single disk an unlimited number of times.
