I purchased this recorder a year ago for recording class lectures at my university. Lecture recording tends to be difficult due to the distance of the speaker, and ambient noise in the classroom caused by other students. This recorder features a built-in directional microphone with "lecture" setting. It also has auto reverse, which allows the highest quality speed settings to record unattended either 50 or 115 minute lectures using either c-60 or c-90 tapes. These tapes are later transferred to my PC hard drive using mp3 recording software.
To date, the recorder has seen approx. 2000 hrs. of use. It has stood up very well to this heavy use, and still gives significantly better audio quality than either digital recorders or other cassette recorders that have been tried.
Unfortunately, the recorder motor noise is audible on the tapes. It is significantly louder than the motor noise on my other recorders, including Olympus and other Sony models. Despite this, it remains my favorite lecture recorder, due to the high recording quality when using the built in microphone.
