| hlbirk's Full Review: Sony PHC-Z10 CD Shelf System |
About 2 years ago I went in search of a small stereo for the workout room. I didn't want anything too big since it was a fairly small space, but I wanted quality sound, a small footprint and the capability of CD usage. What I found was the Sony PHC-Z10 at my local Wal-Mart for about $130.
This system is very stylish by design and incredibly easy to use. There is a remote included, which was great for my time on the treadmill. I could easily change radio stations, choose a different track on 1 of 3 CDs, and of course control the volume. Setting radio stations was a breeze as was setting the clock the first. (Trust me, just that in and of itself is a chore at times!)
There are 2 chambers for playing tapes, however I have no use for either one. My kids that feature more than I do, and a friend of mine used it to record CDs onto tape for her kids. The CD portion has the capability of playing a single CD repeatedly in it's entirety or a single song. You can also do 'program play' which gives you the option of making your own personal program, up to 20 tracks, from all 3 CDs in whatever order you want them.
For those who are big into bass, there is a 'mega bass' button that pumps up the sound! My music choices really don't require that, however the kids think it's fun to do once in a while if a good song comes on. You can also get surround sound by pushing the 'surround' button.
One of my most favorite features, although not used much anymore, is that you can set the alarm and wake up to music. The instruction manual has very specific, yet easy, instructions on how to do this. If not using the system for an alarm clock you can use it to fall asleep to music with a timer that can be set for 10, 20, 30, 60, 90 or 120 minutes. Sony went even deeper and made it so that you can fall asleep and wake up to different music! Again, follow the directions in the manual to make sure you get it set correctly.
Hooking the PHC-Z10 system up was a breeze initially. There are guidelines in the back of the owner's manual about hooking in other components such as VCR, TV or MiniDisc player/recorder...however, I have not done that either.
Overall I am very pleased with this unit. It has mainly been used in the workout room, but lately it's found a new home as my main stereo. The speakers can either be set right beside the main part, or spread out with the speaker wire. I got about 4 feet of length, which made it very easy to put the main unit in my entertainment center and the speakers on top of that.
