About one year ago I decided to spend my Christmas money on a PSone. I surprised when I saw the PSone was different from the original Playstation. I thought if it was any smaller it would be a gameboy advance. After all the original Playstation was big and bulky. I bought it because there where a few Playstation games I wanted to get.
The graphics on the Playstation are only 32 bit, which means most games don't surpass the graphics found on the N64. However since theyre on disc the games are a bit longer and there cheaper. There are also fmv scenes to that help in RPG games.
Of course with the disc comes the load times and the Playstation has some long load times in a lot of games which gets annoying.
Controller.
Sony isnt much for originality and it doesnt help that the Playstation was originally meant to be an add on to the old SNES. The controller therefore is a rearranged SNES controller. This is ok because the controller is conformable although it does take a while to get used to. On the left there is the control pad and on the right a circle full of geometrical shapes. On top are the L and R buttons but unlike the SNES there are 2 of them. On the bottom of the controller are the analog sticks that Sony took from the N64. However unlike the N64 these ones aren't has reliable and there harder to hold. Plus a lot of games don't use them I find it easier to just use the directional pad. Another thing Sony took was the ability of a shaking controller with the rumble pack, except Sony put the pack inside the controller so there is no heavy weight or the need for batteries.
Memory Card
With the CD comes the need for these things to save data. That's the bad news, the worse news is Sony memory card costs about 15 dollars for only 15 blocks of save data. That's a dollar per save for a lot of games. I do recommend the cheaper memory cards
if you are a serious gamers.
The games
Ok lets get to the main reason why people buy systems the game, no matter how good the system is it isnt nothing but a box of wires without the games.
recommended games.
Megaman X4
The best game in the X series. Choose from either X or Zero and stop the repliforces war. The graphics fit the anime tone of the game and the music is awesome. '
Mega Man X5
Another good game from the X series. This time X and Zero have to stop a space colony from falling and destroying the earth. You only have a limited amount of stage choices before that happens (16 to be exact) collect the stuff you need to save the world. While the overall game play is the same has X4 new things have been added like bosses that get stronger, and the ability to equip things.
Megaman X6
The latest game of the X series is between X5 and X4 status. It doesnt have the pick up and play like most Megaman games do, but it does have challenge to it, it's the first Megaman game that ever really frustrated me. It's 3 weeks later after the space colony started to fall, thanks to Zero heroic sacrifice the earth was saved but it's a mess. Now X is out to clean up the mess and now a new nightmare virus that resembles Zero is attacking reploid and X is out to stop it.
Megaman Legends
The first 3d Megaman game, this one takes place in another universe. In this one Megaman Volnutt and his crew of diggers crash land on an island threaten by the Bonnes a group of pirates. While this is a Megaman game don't thing of it has just a 3d version of the traditional game. It's an adventure game that is a mix of Zelda and Metroid, dig in underground metriod type mazes, and explore and get new items in the Zelda type overworld.
Final Fantasy Chronocles
This one combines two great games Final Fantasy 4 and the SNES hit Chrono Trigger in one game pack. There is some problem with load time especially in trigger other then that it's a great game.
Chrono Cross
A sequel to Chrono trigger. Chrono Cross takes place 20 years after the events of Chrono Tirgger in this one you take control of Serge has you explore two universe that where created has a side effect from Chrono's crew when they saved the earth the first time. While it doesnt have the story that Chrono Trigger had it does have the characters around 40 to sign up and pick from. Also the battle are a bit different going from time based to turn based settle.
Final Fantasy 9
A thief known has Ziadane is assign to kidnap Princess Garnet by force if necessary. Only to have his mission botched by the fact that the Princess wants to get kidnapped. This is only the beginning of the story, add in a black mage, a strange creature that likes eating, an over protective cults of a body guard, and the weridess villain in FF history and you got a great game.
Final Fantasy 7
Yes the greatest game in Final Fantasy history, the game where it seems like at least one character from it makes a cameo appearance. Whether the cameo be Ehrgiez or Kingdom Hearts this is the best FF game out there. Cloud a mercenary must stop an undead mad man from destroying the earth.
Spiderman.
Does what ever a spider can. In this one you take control of Spiderman and all of his abilities. Including wall crawling, web shooting, and wise cracking.
The Misadventures of Tron Bonne.
The female pirate that annoyed Megaman in Megaman legends is back to rescue her big brother from his debt. To do this of course she and her 40 servbots are going to do the typical pirate stuff, gamble, rob banks, dig for treasure, and hijack cows (dont ask).
Yugioh Forbidden Memories.
Ill admit it this game doesnt mimic the card game like the GBA Yugioh Eternal Dulist soul does but its still an addictive card game. Help Yami Yugi get back to his time so he can save the world from a mad man out to get the millennium items to destroy the world.
Norse by Norsewest.
It's been a year since the lost Vikings beat an evil alien and return home. Now they have been kidnapped again by the same alien and sent in the past. This is not an action game but a puzzle game. Each Viking has a power, one to attack enemies, the other to run and jump, and the other to shield. Each one has there own personality and they like to tell jokes. If you die to many times they will also let you know that there not happy.
Final recommendation to I recommend the ps1 yes and no. It's a good system with good games (despite any real original first party support). However it's out class by the PS2 which costs only 150 dollars more and can play all the PS1 games.
