Pros: Sound Quality, Durability
Cons: Uncomfortable, Frequency Issues
I enjoy the great outdoors a lot, even if that means going for a walk through my local neighborhood park. I've always believed in the benefits of exercise, and I prefer to listen to music for motivational purposes. Living in a major metropolitan area, has a lot of advantages, especially when it comes to having a good selection of radio stations. There are all types of music, sports talk, and political shows that are liberal or conservative in nature. While at my local electronics retailer, I saw the Sony Walkman of my dreams.(Or so I thought) I figured it would be perfect to listen to these radio stations with, and its small size made it perfect for exercise.
Sony is usually a reputabtle electronics manufacturer, and I have bought many of their products. The main reasons for this are long term reliability, and value for my money. They have never failed me, and I've always been satisfied with every item-until now.(A few reservations) I brought my S2 home, installed the necessary battery(AAA), and went for a hour walk around town. After 15 minutes, I noticed a bit of discomfort in my ears. The earbuds go in your ear with this unit, and that leads to a unpleasant experience. The way that they stick in your ear, will irritate your ears, even though it does provide for excellent sound.
The sound is excellent, and Sony's Mega Bass provides enough power for even ardent fans of rap, house, and dance music. The volume control at full blast is exceptionally loud, and due to the speakers being inside your ear, is not a good idea. You can program in memory 30 channels for easy selection,(15 FM/ 5 AM/ 5 TV/ 5 Weather)and the digital tuner is very easy to use. Readout is a breeze, and most people will be able to see the numbers without any issues. There is also a reflector on the back, which is good for safety purposes, even though its quite small.
A major complaint I have is frequency issues. The AM dial is below average, and I have only been able to pull in 3 stations adequately. This has been when weather conditions were favorable to broadcast transmissions, and the weather channels do not come in. (My local broadcast for this is only about 20 miles away, as the crow flies) The television channels(2-13), come in very clear, as does the FM band. I have enjoyed listening to my television news reports, while spending time at the park.
This unit is water resistant, and it has been stuck with me through a couple of surprise downpours. There have been no adverse effects, and it is very durable. Unfortunately, I'm a bit of a klutz, which has caused some problems with electronics in the past. I have dropped this radio twice, and it has not missed a beat. The second time I was especially worried, because it was a pavement surface!(The radio frequency issues were occuring long before the drops.)
This radio is light, and it weighs only 5 ounces. Its small size allows for me to place it in my jacket pocket, and it runs a long time without a battery replacement.(I usually only change the one AAA battery every two weeks, and I use it often) If you can deal with your ears being a bit uncomfortable, and the frequency issues, its a average radio for the price. I bought it for $49.99, and it comes with a one year warranty from Sony. I would recommend this radio for exercise purposes, and it has been a reliable performer since purchase over two months ago.
