Pros: cheap

Cons: 100w? No way.
Runs hot. REALLY hot - into 4 ohm speakers.
The Bottom Line: There are better choices in the 5.1 receiver market but this one is fine for the average home user

| erisajd's Full Review: Sony STR-DE595 5.1 Channels Receiver |
I had this item for 5 years. I was happy with it until I found some killer Cerwin Vega and Klipsch speakers to upgrade my home theater. I thought it sounded great through JBL N38's and Wharfedale surrounds. When I hooked up the new speakers it seems a little dull - anything but crisp.
So, I bought a Denon AVR amp. When I pulled the Sony unit out , it stated power consumption was 210 watts. So, how can this unit drive 100watts a channel into 5 channels and only consume 210 watts? I hooked it to a meter - its putting out 45watts a channel at full power into 8 ohms.
My Denon is 85watts a channel [8ohm] and out weighs this unit by 5 lbs easily. When I got it all hooked up - I put on Top GUn, a cheesy movie but great sound the first 10 minutes. Did you know you can hear the hose scrape across the deck in the openings scenes? Or hear the tailhook hit the wire? You can with my new setup. I never heard ANY of that with this unit.
Anyway - its a great unit for what it does. On a scale of ten, its a six.
