You need to add the word "should" to your last paragraph.
I use a Nakamichi and it is really good, but needs repair every few years.
$260 is NOT very expensive for a cassette deck. Is it really fair to compare this Sony with a Nakamichi?
But you're right: recordings should sound natural, and there shouldn't be audible wow and flutter. Perhaps the bias is off or the buttons that select tape type (assuming they exist) are marked wrong.
