Pros: Light, compact, long recording time, solidly built, great sound, good menu navigation.
Cons: A bit pricey. Remote not well lit. ATRAC conversion slows down downloads.
The Bottom Line: Great portable music, competition for smaller microdrive units. If you liked MD you'll love Hi-MD.

| aleein8's Full Review: Sony Walkman MZ-NH1 Personal MiniDisc Player |
What a great unit! I bought it at Minidisc Canada for $510.00 CDN. I am very happy with the MZ-NH1. I had still been using my Pioneer MJ-D707 to record disks and playing them back while commuting on my MZ-E90 (a great MD player). Being able to record 27 albums on 1 disk has been great, up until now I could only record up to 80 minutes. The HI-LP setting sounds really good, there are some digital artifacts, but while sitting on the train you dont really notice. The HI-SP setting is really good, unless you are a real audiophile and dont like compressed audio formats you will not notice the difference between this and CD. Of course you can record in linear PCM with this unit, although recording time is drastically reduced. The MZ-NH1 is very light and compact for a recording unit, only slightly larger than my MZ-E90, but lighter. The build quality seems to be very high. The remote is a bit larger than on previous MD units, however this is to allow menu navigation on your discs. I found operation and navigation through the menus quite intuitive and straight forward. One problem with the remote is that it is not quite bright enough in dim lighting, it is quite clear when dark. The supplied earphones are fairly good for earbud style phones however it is best to invest in a better pair. Battery life is good when compared to other types of players, however not as good as previous MD models. The sound options, surround, and graphic equalizer are quite good, much better than just a bass boost option. The included softwear is fairly good. Sony however does still insist upon using ATRAC, and not MP3 for its compression codec. I would argue in terms of sound quality it is the right decision. Atrac3 plus is far superior to mp3 listen some time and hear the difference. Atrac however does limit compatibility with other recorders etc. Don't want to be negative about such a great unit. I have no real need for mp3 compatibility and as such, am extremely happy with the MZ-NH1. Ultimately this may be the HI-MD's downfall (we'll see). Overall the MZ-NH1 is an excellent player/ recorder And I highly recommend it. If Sony would add MP3 compatibility they would have real solid IPOD competition.
