| holdencars's Full Review: Philips Sonic Edge 5.1 PSC605 Sound Card |
The Philips Sonic Edge is a very good value soundcard. The soundcard incorporates QSound Labs audio algorithms, for both 2 and 4 speakers.
QXpander and QSurround are 3D algorithms for 2 speaker systems, with QXpander widening the stereo field considerably for a realistic 3D experience. QSurround works on DVD's to place virtual speakers around the user. For multi-channel systems, QSounds QMSS (QSound Multi speaker system) is used. This technology converts ordinary stereo files into multi-channel audio.
Unlike most other soundcards, QMSS doesn't simply "mirror" the front audio to the rear - it actually analyses the audio and positions the effects accordingly. Therefore, vocals stay infront of the user, while other instruments are positioned around the user. This is a very impressive effect - in both games and music, and has made me look over my shoulder countless times!!
The Sonic Edge also support A3D 1, EAX1 and EAX2, and through QSounds 2D to 3D remapping feature, will add 3D effects to older non 3d games (not DOS ones though).
CPU usage can be on the high side, but is dependent on your CPU speed. Any computer over say 600MHz should have no problems.
The control panel, Philips Sound Agent 2 is very user friendly and graphically orientated which makes any changes really simple.
Overall, the Sonic Edge may not be audiophile material, but it doesn't pretend to be. It's simply a great value packed card, which will surely satisfy most of the users out there.
