I have to say, I've been a Bose fan since 1970 or so when my big brother used to blast his 901's until the windows shook in our house! I've never actually owned any Bose product myself though, until yesterday when my MediaMates finally arrived!
I had a pair of lame Altec Lansings that came with my computer--I'm sure that Altec must make some fine speakers--but these were not it. Since my recent addiction to Napster (!) I realized that I needed some good speakers. I searched high and low on the Internet and found these for $159.00--not bad, considering their list price of $259.00, or thereabouts.
I have had to replay my entire mp3 library on these speakers because I'm actually hearing this music for the first time! I've heard pings and clicks and whispers and triangles and tambourines that I never heard before. I put on a Bruce Hornsby song and went into the kitchen. I had to fight the impulse to ask Bruce if he'd like some coffee, because Lordy Lordy, he was IN my living room!
Honestly, they are the closest thing to a live performance that I've ever heard. If I were a recording artist, I would demand that everyone who was going to listen to my music, listen to it on Bose speakers. They don't go up to an extraordinarily high volume but it's definitely loud enough and the crystal clarity (at any volume) is just mesmerizing. They are a bit pricey but in my opinion, well worth it.
