| J_McNew's Full Review: Bose MediaMate® 2 Speakers |
More and more people, myself included, are using their computers as entertainment centers. A modern home computer combined the functions of a CD player, DVD player, and MP3 player. Not to mention computer games! So why do most people have their fantastic computers hooked up to crappy speakers? Well, you no longer have an excuse!
Bose snuck up on me with these gems. I am a Bose fan. I've got a few pairs of their home speakers dating back to the 1970's. But somehow I had never heard of their Media Mates until I ran across them in a BestBuy flyer. I knew I had to have them (after a good listen, of course).
I rushed out to BB that same day, only to find out that they were sold out. I was told that they had no more on order and the salesman (associate) wasn't sure if they were ever going to carry them again. So I hurried over to the closest Bose store and bought a pair. I was told that they had received a shipment that same morning, and I was getting the last one.
The setup is standard. There is a power cord with a transformer. This attaches to one speaker (right). Also on the rear of the right speaker you will find two sets of RCA stereo inputs (A and B source). There is also a miniplug, into which the left speaker wire is inserted. On the front of the right speaker is a headphone minijack (a nice feature often missing from computer speakers), a volume knob, and an A-B mix knob.
The speakers are angled up so that the sound is directed more towards your head. They are a hefty two pounds, and really look nice. I got them in Ice Blue, which is the closest match to my aluminum computer case. Also included in the box are two cables, RCA to RCA stereo, and RCA to miniplug stereo. Most people will use the latter to connect to a computer or portable source.
I find the volume knob, contrary to another review, easy to use. The A-B mix knob mixes your two inputs (if used) to whatever degree you desire.
I like having two inputs, because I can plug in my minidisc player or my FM radio while I'm doing work or playing a game. The mixer allows you to also hear the beeps and bloops from your computer.
The speakers really sound great. On another computer, I have a set of Yamaha speakers (3 piece) that can churn out more bass, but the Bose are more accurate. The Yamahas cost me $120, so I feel that the Bose were a really good deal. I like not having the subwoofer at my feet, and the bass response is impressive for a two-speaker setup. Everyone has been impressed with the sound quality so far.
Knowing their reputation, and Bose speaker is a sound investment. For instance, I had a 20-year-old set of Bose 901 series II speakers. The foam surrounds on almost all of the drivers has rotted away. Even though these speakers are over 20 years old, Bose offered to trade them in on a brand-new pair (worth $1500) for less than $400). You can't really beat that kind of service long after the warranty has expired.
I highly recommend the Bose Media Mates.
