Well, I bought these speakers at Best Buy, so I was able to test multiple systems. I always had my eyes on the Bose, since I have a Lifestyle system and have found it to be bulletproof.
The price range is a little steep for some, but all medium range systems were about 100 bucks. I have limited space and don't need a 5.1 system.
I'll be brief. I've always trusted Bose, but Altec had a stylish system (with powered subwoofer) that was on rebate for only 60 bucks, regularly 100.
Why did I go Bose? Design, reputation, sound quality, and durability. The salesman tried to sell me the extended warranty. My response? "Bose don't break, brother."
I've had an old Lifestyle 6 system for 10 years and it's still working perfectly.
The cubes provide excellent sound throughout the full sound spectrum without the need for a subwoofer and without being obtrusive. They accomodate two input sources and allow mixing. They are angled upwards to optimize acoustics on the desktop. Little considerations that like these should tell you that the Bose engineers know what they are doing.
If it makes any difference, I have a high end sound card with optical outputs and I chose these event though I could have gotten a high end system. I have no regrets.
