I'll start by saying that this speaker is absolutely wonderful for anyone starting a home theatre system. It was without a doubt- a prime piece of Polk Audio's economy-priced equipment.
In my setup, I have this speaker sitting on top of a 21' Panasonic Tau television. The front left/right speakers I chose to go with this are the Polk Audio RT15i's, which are also spectacular. The receiver is a 200-watt Technics SA-DX940 and seems to match the Baltimore beauties (Polk Audio is based in Baltimore) perfectly.
Although I had to set my receiver to increase dB value to the center channel, speech quality is superb. I feel like I should be responding to them if a movie character should ask something. Furthermore, I find that watching movies like Traffic, Spy Game, and Saving Private Ryan - movies that emphasize realistic environment (unlike the Matrix) - gunshots are very precise and clear.
Now, the one gripe I have with this speaker is odor. That may seem funny, but it's quite real. The room I use this in is my small bedroom and my main viewing point is the bed which is 8, 9, maybe 10 feet from the TV and center speaker. If, there is a bass heavy sequence on the center channel (The Matrix DVD), the front firing bass port on the Polk Audio CS175i seems to push out a very particle-wood-like scent. Even from 10 feet away I can smell it. My friend has the same speaker and suffers from a similar problem. I've tried spraying cologne into the depths of the speaker, but that just makes it worse as the air from the bass pushes the cologne out into the room. Thank you for letting me gripe.
