Pros: Great highs and lows, very rich sound, volume control on right speaker
Cons: wired inputs
The Bottom Line: This is the best 3-piece available, it even beats some 5-piece systems. For the audio enthusiast who cannot afford to get a THX system for their computer!

| saberman2001's Full Review: Yamaha YST-MS201 2 Speakers |
I had been putting off purchasing an external speaker system for quite some time because of my iMac's Harmon Kardon built in speakers. However, my college is discourages the presence of Macs and requires a laptop. Though my laptop speakers were acceptable for a while, I began to miss the "rich" sound provided by my previous speakers. After a visit to Best Buy I left, relatively disappointed with the quality, the speakers (in my price range) simply lacked the quality I wanted. My local Comp USA had a much wider selection of speakers on display and after trying almost all of them I decided on these. I believe that these are even better than the Cambridge 5 piece system (which was on sale for a comparable price (Early September 2001)). The Yamaha YST-MS201 provided the robust sound I had been looking for. They provide great highs and lows at all the volume levels I have tried them at. They are also great for the cluttered desk, because volume control is integrated into the right speaker, rather than having a separate volume control. However, the bass adjustment is located on the sub, but if you are like me you have one setting you keep it at. These speakers take up some space on the desk but not much. The only disadvantage is that the lines are hardwired to the source. The line in is attached to the sub, and the speaker wires are attached to the speakers. This is only important if the wires were to become damaged though.
NOTE: The entire system is NOT wired together, each component has a wire affixed to it.
After deciding on the Yamaha 3-piece at Comp USA (only available in white, and as luck would have it were sold out), I remembered seeing more speakers with the CD players at Best Buy so I returned and purchased these (only available in Black and more expensive). If you decide to get the YST-MS201 from Best Buy, remember - they are kept with the portable CD player external speakers, not with the computer speakers for some reason.
I recommend you check the prices at your various local shops so you can get the color you want, at the lowest available price. Don't forget about competitive pricing, most shops will match other shops prices!
