I've been using the same generic speakers for the past 5 years, they came with my computer when I bought it...I've upgraded nearly everything, but never got around to speakers, despite me being an audiophile (music lover). I went to Future Shop yesterday, and had no idea what I really wanted, the clerk was amazingly helpful, and he showed me the in-store display which had these Yamaha speakers at it. I was extremely impressed with the sound quality for the price, and picked them up.
I've been listening to all my music non-stop lately, and am considering buying two extra satellites to boost the sound. The satellites are spaces-saving, but deliver amazing sound.
The sub-woofer is made of wood, but is magnetically shielded so it can be placed near your monitor. I never noticed how much sound I missed, I tried turning only the woofer off and was blown away by the difference.
The master volume control is useful, the entire system can be turned down in one simple twist of the wrist. The only feature that would be useful would be a headphone jack on the speakers, but otherwise they are perfect.
