martytdx's Full Review: Star Wars: Rebellion for Windows
When this game originally came out, I was full of expectations. For the most part, it fulfills them. It is finally the chance to control a little piece of the Star Wars universe.
You get to take control of either the Empire or the Rebellion, and try to bring the rest of the universe over to your side. The keys are getting planets to join you and keeping them.
Here are some tips that I discovered early on:
1) build TWO shield generators on a planet - it keeps the opposition out, for a while at least
2) Send everyone out recruiting or on diplomacy at the start. After a few turns, then worry about advances in troops, manufacturing or ships.
3) Find a Sector with an Imperial World that has a high degree of affinity for the Rebellion. Bombard it to kill off any Imperial troops, and they will give their allegiance to the Rebellion, as will 3-5 others in that sector. This only works at the beginning of the game.
4) fighters are better than starships. If you are weak on shipyards, build a dozen fighters over that Mon Calamari Cruiser. 1 Mon Cal will lose to 2 ISDs, but a dozen X-wings will drive them off.
5) Send Luke to Coruscant immediately. Send Han and Chewie to somewhere close by. Luke will face Vader and perhaps the Emperor, and if he is captured, Han and Chewie usually can get him back. It advances his training by about 100 turns this way.
Some gripes I have with the program:
1) Control of the troop action (a la Force Commander) would be nice - switch from a space battle to land battle - see if you are a good tactician in both respects.
2) Not enough 'personality' from the characters. And other main characters are missing. What about Boba Fett, Dengar and other bounty hutners? What about being able to swing a deal with Jabba? What about Black Sun, or even other groups which have an effect - smugglers, Hapan Empire, etc. Maybe even a rogue Jedi Knight?
3) If you play the Rebels, and you can last the first 100 days and the first big Imperial armada that hits you with an interdictor, then you will most likely win. I'm like 35-1 in these situations.
4) The Imperial morale issues are a pain in the butt. Lose one world to the Rebels and you will lose a dozen more quickly.
5) There was never an upgrade. I would love to see an upgrade which added some of the other things that came about in the Expanded Universe. Mara Jade, the Clone Emperor (if you killed the first one), etc.
Overall, the game is worth it but you WILL waste a lot of time playing it (it's a bit addictive). A good buy but some issues that I hope that LucasArts will address with a version 2, or even just a mission upgrade...
